Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 20: Es-ki-mo)

Ashley’s breath increased in speed, her fingers fidgeting with the creases in the rock.

“I know…I mean, I know how you broke it, okay? But…I want to hear you say it.”

Ashley felt tears prick up under her eyelids, and was thankful Spencer couldn’t see them.

She knew this was coming. Ashley knew this subject would eventually be broached. There was no way out but to tell her. It didn’t matter anyways, Spencer already knew. Ashley didn’t want to tell her, the details only fueling her own worthless sense of self worth. Whoever said victims of abuse should just buckle down, suck it up, and they’d make it through…have never been victims of abuse.

“I climbed the lemon tree. Dad hates it when I do that. He says it devalues the property when I fuck with the tree. Always, I wanted to try and make a lemon meringue pie for my mom…she really likes it and so I found this recipe in a cookbook she has. I guess when you use real lemons, it’s really good…so, I climbed the tree and pulled a few down. The ones on the ground didn’t look very good; they were kinda squishy and brown. Anyways, I didn’t hear dad come home. I was reaching up really high to get this really fat one, and I felt a hand grab the back of my pants. It startled me and I lost my grip and slid down the side. I hit the first branch with my hip, and then fell backwards, landing on my arm on top of the metal wheel barrow…”

Ashley heard Spencer shift, her breathing at a normal pace.

“…It hurt like hell. I started crying and dad just stood there and told me to go inside. Anyways, after an hour, it had swelled up and I couldn’t move it. Dad just grabbed me by the shirt, tossed me into the car and drove me to the hospital. Before we got out of the car, he turned around and said that I fell in the creek and that’s how I broke it. He said if I said anything otherwise he’d break the other one.”

Spencer sucked in a breath and then was silent. Ashley kept her eyes shut, not sure she wanted to open them and see the look on Spencer’s face.

    1. GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT! there is really nothing more I can say. I love your work/writting more and more everyday. I do like the flashback/ this way we know how Spencer and Ashley got to the point that there at now. love it! o by the way this is me begging. lol . Please post more Please

    2. That was the most intimate, loving, sad, thing ever. Poor Ashley…this chapter actually made me kind of angry only because Spencer claims that if she could she would stand next to Ashley and fight forever. But sometime later when Ashely runs over a bird while biking with Madison and Spencer…Spencer just leaves Ashley, telling her things are going to chanage and basically I don’t want to be your friend anymore. So it just killed me to here Spencer say that right now, knowing her action later are different.

    5. I really, really loved the parallel of the tree in this chapter. First of all, the lemon tree being over “the shed” where they kissed was awesome. Then there’s the whole Ashley climbing the tree trying to a) make a gift for her mom and b) reaching the best lemon she can see only to get pulled down to the ground by her Dad. It’s like she was stopped from reaching something good (with the best intentions) and put back on the ground to rot with the other fallen fruit. Her Dad yanking his chest hairs and enjoying that pain while he watched the girl’s response was really hard to read I’m not quite sure what emotion I felt with that, but it was really hard for me to read. The lemon falling during that conversation was perfect especially the part where no one acknowledged it falling, but the all knew it had just like Ash. I LOVED the Viking drawing that was one of the most intimate and sweet scenes I’ve read about the girls. Finally, there’s Spencer’s admission that she wants to kiss Ashley and another lemon falls to rot with the others. It just makes sense with everything that happened later. I could be completely off base, please let me know if I am!
