Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 20: Es-ki-mo)

Spence grinned to herself, her head lowered into her lap, tracing the patterns that outlined her skirt.

Ash watched the neighborhood dog as it barked incessantly from across the street, crazy Mrs. Beezly using an umbrella handle that was hooked onto the dog’s collar, to yank him towards her side of the street.

“Man, she is nuts…and that dog barks at everything! It’s so annoying.”

“Okay, close your eyes.” Ashley jerked her head over towards Spencer, a strange look on her face.

“Why?” Ash grinned widely, knowing full well what was up, and surprisingly quite excited by it.

“Cause I’m gonna draw something on your cast and I can’t so it if you’re watching.” Spencer tapped the tip of the marker against her cast, her eyebrow taking full control of the upper half of her face.

Ash scratched her scalp where sweat had begun to drip and bit her lower lip.
“Um…okay. But, should I be scaaaared, my dear Spencer?”

Spencer laughed. “Yes, you should be terrified.”

A car door slammed loudly, and Ashley’s head jerked up swiftly. Her chest constricted, and the finger’s of her left hand dug into the jagged rock next to her. The two sat in silence, their shoulders touching, legs no longer swaying, as the figure approached them across the grass. Spencer let go of Ashley’s arm as she subtly dragged it back into her own lap, unconsciously covering her arm with part of her shirt.

He stood about 10 feet from them, stopping abruptly as if striking an invisible wall, one that Ashley had learned to erect with her mind whenever he was near. His shirt was unbuttoned to his mid-chest, tufts of dark hair emerging from beneath. The fishing hat was tilted a bit to the side, his cigar protruding from the far left corner of his mouth. His jaw shifted side to side, gnawing on the wet stubby end.

A lemon fell off the tree, striking the ground with a thud. No one turned to witness it.

    “What are you girl’s doing?”

Ashley’s eyes darted upwards, as if trying to wake her brain, which had taken a nap in the afternoon sun. The words would come momentarily, as would the appropriate tone, and the correct body language. All three elements had to be exactly as he wanted them. If one part faltered, they all did, and Ashley would spend the night holding an ice cube to her lip that was encased in a washcloth.

    1. GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT! there is really nothing more I can say. I love your work/writting more and more everyday. I do like the flashback/ this way we know how Spencer and Ashley got to the point that there at now. love it! o by the way this is me begging. lol . Please post more Please

    2. That was the most intimate, loving, sad, thing ever. Poor Ashley…this chapter actually made me kind of angry only because Spencer claims that if she could she would stand next to Ashley and fight forever. But sometime later when Ashely runs over a bird while biking with Madison and Spencer…Spencer just leaves Ashley, telling her things are going to chanage and basically I don’t want to be your friend anymore. So it just killed me to here Spencer say that right now, knowing her action later are different.

    5. I really, really loved the parallel of the tree in this chapter. First of all, the lemon tree being over “the shed” where they kissed was awesome. Then there’s the whole Ashley climbing the tree trying to a) make a gift for her mom and b) reaching the best lemon she can see only to get pulled down to the ground by her Dad. It’s like she was stopped from reaching something good (with the best intentions) and put back on the ground to rot with the other fallen fruit. Her Dad yanking his chest hairs and enjoying that pain while he watched the girl’s response was really hard to read I’m not quite sure what emotion I felt with that, but it was really hard for me to read. The lemon falling during that conversation was perfect especially the part where no one acknowledged it falling, but the all knew it had just like Ash. I LOVED the Viking drawing that was one of the most intimate and sweet scenes I’ve read about the girls. Finally, there’s Spencer’s admission that she wants to kiss Ashley and another lemon falls to rot with the others. It just makes sense with everything that happened later. I could be completely off base, please let me know if I am!
