Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 20: Es-ki-mo)

Spencer giggled at the sight and began tapping her finger against Ash’s cast.

    “Does that hurt?”

“Naw, I can’t feel anything. Except for this itch I had earlier. That s-u-c-k-e-d.”

“Aw, what’d you do to make it stop?" Spencer kept tapping the cast, but continued to look into Ashley’s sweaty face.

“I banged it against the wall until it stopped.”

Spencer’s mouth hung open at Ashley’s confession.

Ashley laughed and shoved Spencer in the arm with her bad arm.

“Just kidding. I stuffed a stick down it and scratched it with that.”

Ashley continued swinging her feet outwards, and then decided to go sideways, ramming her shoes into Spencer’s. Spencer kicked back.

“I wanna write on it.” Spencer’s face brightened at her own comment.

“Okay…um, there’s a marker in my room on my desk.”

Spence hoped off the rock and ran into the house, her skirt flowing through the breeze, reminding Ashley of a jellyfish she saw at an aquarium with her parents in Denver.

Across the street, her neighbor had rescued the runaway fruit, and was now trying to catch her dog that was chasing an invisible fluttering object across the street.

The rays of sun burned into her skin, as the sting seemed to permeate her whole body. She glanced at the screen door, hoping Spencer would hurry up, not wanting to be alone with her thoughts this soon after the ‘accident.’ Her thoughts filtered back to the hospital, Spencer sitting next to her on the bed, their feet touching, Ashley noticing Spencer’s shoes were about two sizes bigger than hers. She saw her father talking with the doctor through the glass window by the door. Actually, her father was talking at the doctor, his eyes glancing briefly at Ashley, as he spoke, as if using Ashley as some sort of visual support for his argument of how Ashley had fallen into the creek.

She was a wild child, he had told Dr. Schafer, always tripping, falling, and coming home with bruises and cuts, sometimes broken bones. Ashley glanced down at the cast, wondering how long it would take for her arm to heal and if it would be crooked or something.

The back screen door slammed, and Spencer came skipping across the lawn with a red marker raised above her head. Without stopping, she grabbed onto the rock and hoisted herself up, bumping Ashley in the process, causing her to grab the rock with her free hand so as not to fall off.

    1. GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT! there is really nothing more I can say. I love your work/writting more and more everyday. I do like the flashback/ this way we know how Spencer and Ashley got to the point that there at now. love it! o by the way this is me begging. lol . Please post more Please

    2. That was the most intimate, loving, sad, thing ever. Poor Ashley…this chapter actually made me kind of angry only because Spencer claims that if she could she would stand next to Ashley and fight forever. But sometime later when Ashely runs over a bird while biking with Madison and Spencer…Spencer just leaves Ashley, telling her things are going to chanage and basically I don’t want to be your friend anymore. So it just killed me to here Spencer say that right now, knowing her action later are different.

    5. I really, really loved the parallel of the tree in this chapter. First of all, the lemon tree being over “the shed” where they kissed was awesome. Then there’s the whole Ashley climbing the tree trying to a) make a gift for her mom and b) reaching the best lemon she can see only to get pulled down to the ground by her Dad. It’s like she was stopped from reaching something good (with the best intentions) and put back on the ground to rot with the other fallen fruit. Her Dad yanking his chest hairs and enjoying that pain while he watched the girl’s response was really hard to read I’m not quite sure what emotion I felt with that, but it was really hard for me to read. The lemon falling during that conversation was perfect especially the part where no one acknowledged it falling, but the all knew it had just like Ash. I LOVED the Viking drawing that was one of the most intimate and sweet scenes I’ve read about the girls. Finally, there’s Spencer’s admission that she wants to kiss Ashley and another lemon falls to rot with the others. It just makes sense with everything that happened later. I could be completely off base, please let me know if I am!
