Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: 12: She said, She said)

I really wanted to talk with Kaylen, but I had to work at the clinic till 6.  I was stuck talking to myself the rest of the afternoon.  By the time I drove all the way home and showered I had become my new best friend.  I was answering my questions as fast as I was asking them…it just wasn’t making any sense.  I told myself that I sucked at being a best friend and was hoping that I much better at it with Kaylen than I was with myself.

I flopped on my bed and pressed Kaylen’s speed dial number.

She answered immediately.  “I have been waiting forever for you to call!  So did you and Ashley talk or do I have to own up to my ass-kicking threat?”

“No we talked” I said laughing. “We had a good time.”

“So did she tell you that she really is a big homo like you?” Kaylen asked.  The words that came out of Kaylen’s mouth rarely shocked me anymore.

I couldn’t help but laugh.  She always knew how to make me laugh so that I felt comfortable talking about things and that it really wasn’t a huge ominous task.

“How did you know?  Did Aiden tell you?” I asked

“No, it was completely obvious.  Ten minutes after she met us for coffee and I noticed she couldn’t take her eyes off you, I knew” she replied.  “Besides Aiden and I agreed that we wouldn’t dig for information about you two and that we would just let you figure it out.”

“So you think she likes me?”

“Oh please Spencer…don’t make me pull out the blonde card on you.  She is definitely interested.  So spill the dirt on the talkin’ you did.”

I filled Kaylen in on our conversation. How we had kept it fairly general for a bit but Ashley admitted that she felt an attraction between us.  I told her that I was worried that Ashley might think I was just trying to get her for a one night stand.  I was worried about it to.  The chase was always so hot.  Would I not be so into her if we got past that point?  Kaylen told me not to put the cart before the horse.  It is kinda hard to dump someone if you haven’t even started dating yet she told me.

“I don’t know Kaylen, it’s just been so long since I have wanted to have a serious relationship.  I feel that I want to try with Ashley, but I am not sure that I am going to be any good at it.” I said.

“You can’t go into a relationship thinking like that Spencer.  It isn’t fair to either of you.  You can’t think of how badly things ended up with you and Jena.  You can’t think of how the past few relationships you have had consisted of you calling a cab to get home or calling the other girl a cab to get home.  Anything that happens between you and Ashley shouldn’t be based on any other relationship.  It is obvious you like each other so take that as a good sign.  Just be honest and take one day at a time.  If you both want it to happen it is a good chance things will work out.”

“It sounds so easy when you put it like that” I said.

“Oh no, no I didn’t say it would be easy.  I am just saying you have to give it a fair chance.” Kaylen countered.

She was right.  Ashley and I both deserved that fair chance.  Who’s to say it would work, but at least we could say we tried.

“Enough about me I said…so how are things with Aiden?” I asked.

“Well he is smart, funny, looks like a Greek God and to top it off I am completely infatuated with him” she replied happily.  “Pretty pathetic huh?”

“I think it is awesome Kaylen.  You deserve it. I expect full details from your date on Wednesday.” I said.

She agreed that she would spill all the evenings’ events.  We chatted a bit more about a couple of our classes and that we would see each other Wednesday for Anatomy class.

Today had been a wild day, although I was completely happy with the way it turned out.  I just had to figure out how and when to ask Ashley out on a real date with out being a complete moron.
