    Author Notes:

    AU. Ashley is in high school and is falling for an older Spencer.

    “You mean like the stuff with the dolls and killing people?”

    Jill laughed.  “No, actually it’s just the worship of your ancestors and seeking their wisdom.  The bad stuff is only practiced by bad people.  Not my Sunshine.”  Jill smiled at this and I couldn’t help but smile back.  She was the luckiest woman alive.

    We ate in silence for somewhere around ten minutes, to the gentle hum of what I assumed was Sunshine praying in the next room.  It was nice.  I finished my soup first and then chased it with a few sips of beer.  Then I ate the pasta, minus the pesto. I just added butter.  After my last bite of that, Pete finally spoke up.

    “So, you gonna tell us what happened Ashley?”  I choked on the beer in my mouth.

    “You don’t have to if you don’t want to,” Jill added, patting me on the back.  I nodded to her that I didn’t mind, and after a couple of sips I looked up at them all.

    “Well, Spencer’s engaged…”

    Three pairs of eyes bugged out and Pete sighed heavily.

    “Did she just tell you this?” Franklin asked, popping open another beer and sitting it before me.

    “Well, no.  She told me two days ago…well more like I found out two days ago.  He answered the phone.  Aiden.”

    “Holy shit,” Pete said sitting back in his chair and I did the same.

    “Is it over?” Jill asked gingerly.

    “I don’t know,” I said shakily, but then added. “I think so.”  Jill nodded.  “It’s just…I don’t want to be second pick. I love her.  And if she loves me I shouldn’t have to drive her out to the fucking wilderness, no offense, to spend time with her.”

    None of them said anything in response, and I took that as agreement.  I took a sip of my second beer and Franklin reached over and squeezed Pete’s shoulder.  Pete was eying me with so much affection, so much worry.  I looked away.

    “I’m sorry,” he whispered and I wasn’t sure if the others had heard him, but I did.  He was blaming himself for pushing me to go after her.  

    “Don’t” I said, still not looking at him, but I knew that he understood.  Pete understood everything about me.
