Smiling Faces – (Chapter: Chapter Fifteen)

“We were having such a good time,” I whispered to no one and this only made her sob harder.  I just stood there, peering down at her.  I knew that she wouldn’t want me to touch her.  She probably wanted me a million miles away from her right now.  “Don’t get yourself too worked up okay,” I said quietly.  “We’re miles away from any hospital.”  She didn’t reply, but i knew that she’d heard me.  Then I turned and walked toward cabin one.  I couldn’t look at her, not without having my heat shatter into a million pieces.  Maybe we couldn’t do this…

    Ashley’s POV

I don’t know how long I cried, or when I fell asleep on that bench, but when I woke up, I was in a small, warm room.  I heard dishes banging against each other far off and I remembered how hungry I was.  I sat up.

I was actually in a small sewing room, fast sleep on a sofa.  The room smelled like life, like long hours spent together, loving and working together.  My heart ached from the sight of it, the two sewing stations, the two machines and chairs, the two coffee mugs.

Suddenly there was a knock on the door.  I turned and it was Jill.  She stood in the doorway with bright eyes, considering me. Her bright red hair shined in the light from the hall.

    “Are you hungry Ashley?”

I nodded and she beckoned me with a wave of her hand.  I didn’t move.

“Spencer’s not here.  She’s taking her lunch in cabin one.”

That probably was meant to make me feel better, but it only made me want to cry harder.  She was giving up.  Jill sensed my dismay and then came over and pulled me into a hug.  She smelled like cinnamon, like fresh pumpkin bread on Thanksgiving morning, like everything love is supposed to smell like.  She rocked me from side to side and hummed some.  I suddenly felt five years old, but for the time being that was okay.  I needed this.

“Sunshine made you some soup since you had a fever when we found you outside.  But if you’re feeling better, there’s pasta and pesto.”

“Can I have both?” I choked through a sob, and Jill laughed.  Her laughter was infectious and her whole body shook. I chuckled some.
