Smiling Faces – (Chapter: Chapter Fifteen)

    Spencer’s POV

“What do you mean we shouldn’t do this…” I stammered.  My grip tightened on her wrist.

    “I just…It’s just…I don’t think-”

“You don’t think what?!”  I was standing now, peering down at her. This was killing her.  I could tell.  Her eyes were already filling with tears.  She looked away and began to strum the guitar once more.  I grabbed the instrument and wrenched it from her grip angrily.  “No you don’t get to ignore me okay Ashley!  You get to look at me and explain why you’re ruining something great!”  My voice cracked some.  “We’re having a good time.  Don’t ruin it!”

She stood too and looked me square in the eye.  I took a step back.  I hadn’t expected the rage there, the hurt.  “A good time?” she scoffed.  “No Spencer you’re the one having a good time.  You get to run away with me like I’m some side dish, like I’m just some replacement for him.  Meanwhile, every second I’m trying to find a new way to get you to stay.  And I can’t look at you without thinking of him and the fact that you’re not really mine.  You’re his!”  She was shaking even more now and backing away from me.  I took a step forward but she put up a hand to stop me.  “You’re engaged Spencer.  Engaged.  How am I supposed to compete with that?”

“But I love you!” I shrieked, my hands gripping my hair.  “I fucking love you! Not Aiden!”

She jumped at the sound of my voice, at the way it cracked through the air and sent shocks down her spine.  “Those are just words Spencer.  Meaningless words…”

I didn’t know what to say then.  What did she want from me.  I was here, spending time with her, loving her.  What was I supposed to do?  Drop everything in my life and just love her and only her?  I couldn’t do that!  The world doesn’t work that way…

When I looked up, Ashley was sitting on the bench again, staring down at her feet.  Her brown locks fell all about her face, shielding it, and I knew that she wanted it that way.  I could hear her fighting back sobs.  Her shoulders quaked with the effort.
