Since Birth – (Chapter: 1: Diper Days)

We’ve been best friends since birth. Our mothers are also best friends, they were pregnant at the same time, only I was born two and a half weeks later than her. She was one of the first few people I met when I was born. She brags about being older all the time, it really bothers me. But I can’t help but love her, she’s my best friend. I’m Spencer Carlin and she is…Ashley Davies. Let’s jog through my memory for a while, back to the diaper days, when things were much simpler.

The first day of daycare. It was a rainy day, I was wearing my little yellow rain hat, with my matching yellow raincoat, while Ashley wore her little red rain hat and her matching red raincoat. We each had our own little lunch box, mine in my left hand, and hers in her right. Her mother (Auntie Chris) had driven us. She’s not my aunt for real, but my mom and her are like sisters, therefore I call her Aunt Chris.

Spencer: “But I no want uh go. I want uh tay home wit you and watch bawney.” I said in my adorable baby voice as we got out of the car.

Ashley: “It ok Spendur…” She wasn’t fully able to pronounce my name until the age of 4 ½ “…I be der too.” she took my hand and it made me feel a little better, Auntie Chris led us across the street and into the overly filled daycare.

I was horrified, needless to say. There were kids running everywhere. I was terrified when I saw a boy in the corner shoving a green crayon up his nose. I tugged on Auntie Christine’s pants and pointed to the boy. She scurried over to deal with to the boy who I would now call “Crayola”. I was shaking profusely. I suppose Ashley felt me shaking, since we were still holding hands, she squeezed my hand a little and looked at me.

Ashley: “It ok, I pwotect you.” I pushed myself further behind her and nodded my head. Auntie Chris came back, she knelt down in front of us.

Christine: “Ok you two. Auntie Paula will be here to get you later. You two look out for each other, and be good.” she smiled at us and gave us each a kiss on the forehead. Some lady, who I would hate for a few weeks, came over to us.
