North of Somewhere: All Grown Up – (Chapter: Unnecessary Words…)

Ashley turned around, hoping that this was the moment Spencer would beg her to come back and they would spend the rest of the night making up for lost time. But she didn’t and Ashley’s heart sank all over again.

“Will you call me…I mean, when…” Spencer paused, knowing she was screwing this up, “can we at least talk soon? You don’t return my calls, you don’t respond to my e-mail…”

“I’m not Lindsay. I can’t be your friend while you figure this thing out. I’m…I’m…”

“I know, you’re with someone else. I get it.”

Ashley shook her head, “No, you don’t understand.” Before she could say anything else, she heard a familiar voice calling her name.

    “Ashhhhley! Come on, let’s go!”

Melissa and Lindsay walked towards them. Lindsay looked like she had just been subjected to some form of exotic torture and she shrugged and mouthed “sorry” as soon as her eyes met Spencer’s.

“Well, we have to go,” Ashley said as Melissa pressed a flurry of kisses onto her neck.

“Yeah, I see that,” Spencer replied, “I’ll see you around, Ashley. Nice to meet you, Marissa.”

“Um, it’s Melissa…you know like, with an ‘l.””

“Sorry, nice to meet you. Bye,” Spencer said, then she turned around and walked quickly to Lindsay’s car. Lindsay followed a few feet behind her, shaking her head.

“So, girlfriend, what do you wanna do next?” Melissa asked excitedly.

“Actually, I think I might be coming down with something.”

Spencer had been sitting on her couch for the last hour, re-playing the scene that had just gone down at the club over and over again in her head. Lindsay had dropped her off, her attempts to cheer Spencer up falling short. What the blonde really needed was some time alone to think this through. She hadn’t expected Ashley to commit so quickly. Their relationship hadn’t even had its proper cooling period and already Ashley was dating someone else. It didn’t seem to add up.

Suddenly there was a knock at the front door. Spencer had a feeling it might be Ashley, and as the door swung open she saw that her intuition had been correct.

“Hey,” Ashley said, casually, as if the debacle at Lucky’s had never happened.

    “Hi.”

    “Can I come in?”

“Yeah, sure,” Spencer said, standing aside to let Ashley enter.

Once Ashley was seated on the couch, Spencer sitting across from her looking tired but beautiful, she began to speak, “I’m sorry about what happened tonight. I freaked out when I saw you with Lindsay and I wanted to make you jealous.”

    “It worked.”

“Listen, I’m going to be honest with you…when you told me you needed space, something inside me changed. I listened to you explain yourself and all I could hear was my inner monologue telling me that it didn’t really matter. Your choice or whatever doesn’t really matter.”

    “Ok…” Spencer replied, nervously.

“So I guess what I’m trying to say is that I won’t be waiting when you’re finally ready to be with me. I’ve waited for you long enough and I just can’t do it again…it hurts,” Ashley said, beginning to cry. Spencer reached over to comfort her, but Ashley stopped her, “Don’t touch me, just let me finish.”

    Spencer nodded, awaiting Ashley’s finale.

“I want you to be happy…I’ve always wanted you to be happy. But not enough to jeopardize my own happiness…not anymore. I’d like to say that we can be friends, but it might take me awhile to be ready for that. I guess for once, you’ll have to wait on me.”

“I can do that. Take all the time you need.”

“I will,” Ashley said, standing up and walking towards the door, “Good luck, Spence.”

“Good luck, Ashley,” Spencer replied. She had a million urges at that moment, but she pushed them all aside. She knew she owed Ashley a lot—and that included her freedom to walk away with no unnecessary words.

Ashley glanced up at Spencer one more time, her eyes sad and filled with tears that awaited their chance to fall, and then she was gone.

    1. well…i am going to go to work depressed now…this is what i feared would happen….i don’t like this, but I know it has to be done…awesome update…i love this story…been following it from the beginning…can’t wait to read more…PMS

    2. This chapter broke my heart, but I’m so looking forward to the day of Ashley’s and Spencer’s renewal of love. This needed to happen, but it still hurts all the same. I have to hand it to you, you are a gifted writer. Looking forward to the next chapter. PMS

    3. Okay so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the next chapter begins with how spencer chased after ashley and quit being so indecisive and now 4 months later they are happily committed…eh eh. I like that. Great chapter as always! PMS!!!

    4. Awesome as usual. I’m glad Ashley explained what happened at the club. It’s a step in the right direction or at least I’m hoping it is. Keep it up =P

    5. Oh lord. Where to begin? I’m glad I finally saw some honestly between the two girls. I’m almost glad that Ashley told Spencer that she won’t be waiting for her when she finally makes up her mind. But I just can’t believe that it’s over for good between Spencer and Ashley. I can’t wait to find out what happened in these four months. I’m sure there’s more I want to say but I just a martini and I’m a little fuzzy-headed at the moment. Would it be presumptuous of me to ask for the next update tonight? This story kept popping up in my head all day. It’s pretty much driving me crazy.

    11. You’re breaking my heart here! But, in the best possible way ever. I’ll admit that I’m that girl who obsessively thinks everything should end in Spashley (call me a dreamer haha). But, I love this story, and you surprise me with every chapter. I can’t wait for the next one!
