“Hi.”
“Hey.”
“It’s been awhile.”
“Yeah…it has.”
Then silence blanketed the two former best friends as they sat across from each other at their favorite café. Spencer had arranged the meeting, leaving a veiled message on Lindsay’s answering machine. It had been two weeks since the last time they had seen each other and with every passing day, Spencer felt more and more anxious about their inevitable meeting.
“So, how have you been?” Lindsay asked, sipping gingerly on her latte.
“I’ve been really good actually.”
“Really?”
“Yeah…how about you?”
“Um, not as good I guess.”
“Oh, what’s going on?” Spencer asked, genuinely concerned.
“Do you really need to ask?” Lindsay replied. She hadn’t meant to sound so bitter, but as the words slipped from her mouth she noticed each one was tainted with a venom she didn’t realize she had. “It’s just that it hasn’t exactly been easy. You didn’t call, I didn’t get an e-mail…not even a text message. I thought I had lost you from my life. I mean…have I? Have I lost you, Spence?”
“No, no…of course not…you’re my friend. I’m just…a lot has changed since that night.”
“Ok…”
Spencer wanted to choose her next words carefully. She didn’t want to give Lindsay the wrong idea about what she wanted. “I need some time. I need some time by myself to really think about what I want…who I want. Right now I feel like I’m going around in circles and maybe that’s because I literally am. I don’t know.”
“What about Ashley?”
“I told her the same thing…that I need some space to figure things out.”
“You broke up with her?” Lindsay asked, eyes wide and waiting for an answer.
“Lindsay…”
“What?”
“You’re missing my point completely.”
“No, I’m not. I get it, ok? You need some time away from this…this incestuous, lesbian carnival. I understand. I guess now the question is, when you’re done dating yourself, who’s it gonna be? Me or Ashley?”
Spencer shook her head.
“That’s what I thought,” Lindsay said, returning to her latte.
“Lindsay, I know this isn’t easy for anyone. Trust me, I understand that I owe everyone in my life an apology. But if there’s anything I learned from Glen’s death, it’s that we only have so much time to get this right…and that’s what I really want—to get this right. You have to know something. I’m so sorry, Linds. I really am. I never wanted to hurt you or Ashley or Rachel. And you know what? If Rachel made you happy, then maybe you should be with her. Who am I to stop you?”

You sure do stir up some emotions with me in this story. I’m almost afraid to read your updates because I know they’re going to upset me. And this one really did. How can Spencer expect to make an honest decision about her feelings for Lindsay and Ashley if she doesn’t give herself the space she needs from both of them. Even if Spencer and Lindsay are just hanging out as friends, Spencer still isn’t getting the distance she needs. Ashley was right to not talk to Spencer for a while. The confrontation that is coming between Spencer, Ashley, and Lindsay is going to be very interesting. I’m so nervous now! You’re killing me here. I’m ready for Spencer to make a decision too. Sadly, part of me wants Ashley to move on from Spencer because Spencer keeps doing things like this to Ashley. But the devoted Spashley fan in me says that there’s no way I would be happy with that. Anyway, this comment is getting way too long again so I’m posting now. I can’t wait to read what happens next!
I’m in total agreement with everything “insertcleveranswer” said. I thought Spencer was going to take time off dating? I guess she can’t stay true to her word. Ashley, you go girl, make Spencer as jealous as you possibly can.Great update…PMS
I am a huge spashley fan, but if Spencer is going to do this, Ash should move on. And I cant wait to find out if Spencer and Lindsay are there as friends or more. You are a great writer and keep it up. PMS!
