Everything Changes After Spending 7 Months Apart – (Chapter: You've got me going back and forth like a ping pong ball!)

My phone starts ringing somewhere in my blanket. ‘You got it, you got it bad, when you’re on the phone, hang up then you call right back’. Thank you ringtone ID. I now know it is Ashley without even looking.

    “Hello?” I answer.

“Hey baby!” She says in a tone that only says that she is happy to talk to me. I hear her light a cigarette in the background. “What are you up to?” She asks

“Just thinking” I say as I reach for a cigarette of my own.

“Penny for your thoughts” She wants to know what I’m thinking about

I take a deep breath to stall and try to think up a way to respond. “You remember how I promised to not let anything go too far with us again?”

I can tell she’s smiling. “Yeah”

“Well I need you to make me a promise in return. I’m not sure that I can keep my promise. If given the opportunity, I won’t be able to turn you away. I want you to promise me that you won’t try.” I breathe for the first time in my entire statement.

“I can’t make that promise. You know I can’t make that promise.”

Yeah, we’re screwed. “Okay, well then if anything happens, I just figured it would be fair to let you know in advance that I might not be able to say no. I will try my hardest, but I make no promises.”

“All I can ask is that you try, baby.” She says and I know this is when we would embrace into a gentle kiss. “Do I want another cigarette or do I want to go to bed?”

“Well, it’s almost three in the morning. You should go to bed. Besides, smoking is really bad for you. So why would you smoke more? But…”

“But you’re not ready to say goodbye yet?”

I smile, “You know me way too well.”

She smokes a half of a cigarette as a compromise as I tell her about some random event. “Babe,” She interrupts in a very small voice. “I’m really tired and I need to go to bed okay?”

    “Okay baby. Get some sleep.”

“I love you baby! Text me when you wake up okay?” She says

    1. first off, I applaud you for writing about what’s going on with your situation right now. second, I’m truly enjoying this. I can understand a lot of what you’re going through, as I’m sure a lot of us on here can. I can especially relate to the ‘voice’. there’s no getting rid of it! I’ll be keeping an eye out for future updates, that’s for sure. and I wish you luck!
