    Panic: Part 3. Read it. It’s worth it.

    “Thanks, I think.”

     Aiden laughed, “I’m being serious, Ash. I mean, what you’re doing is crazy and’ll probably be really bad before it gets good, I mean, like, fucking terrible, but you can do it…. You and Spence are like…the lesbian Corey and Toponga.” Ashley broke into a wide smile as she glanced over at Aiden again, this time laughing out loud.

    “What!?” Aiden exclaimed as he shrugged, “It’s true.”

     “And who does that make you?” Ashley asked laughing.

     Aiden was quiet for a moment before he responded, saying brightly, “Shawn!”

    “Are you going to kill me?” Casey asked. It was the first thing either of them had said in an hour. They were feet apart, curled up on the ground, in what would be total darkness, were it not for the stars, the moon, and the fireflies that happened to infest that particular clearing. So immersed in her own emotions, Spencer had forgotten Casey was there. Casey’s voice was weak but honest. It wasn’t angry or bitter, but matter-of-fact and indifferent. Spencer hated that about her. She hated her frankness, her honesty. She hated that as much as she hated her, she didn’t hate her that much at all.

     “I don’t know.” Spencer said coldly. The lack of matter between them allowed their tones to be carried accurately. They both knew that this moment, the one they were in right then, was probably the rawest they would ever experience.

    “Okay.” Casey said.

    It was quiet again, “Why?”

     Casey’s mind began to whir as it subconsciously searched for the answer, the explanation, it had been playing on repeat in Casey’s head for days. Nothing.

     “I don’t know,” Casey began as she swallowed hard, “I just…When you told me you and Ash were getting married….It’s like something snapped. I mean, that’s forever, Spencer. That’s tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day…No if’s, and’s, or but’s. It’s locked in…And you were gone…To me you were totally gone…I knew that I’d never have you, so…I took you. I didn’t mean to, it just happened.”

     “You  knew me for a week, Casey! I’m your best friends girlfriends, god…”

     “I KNOW! Jesus, I know.”

     “Then what the hell happened!?”

     “I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED, OKAY!? IM CRAZY, SPENCE. I’M FUCKING INSANE, ALRIGHT!? I JUST SAW YOU AND ASH SO HAPPY TOGETHER, ALL SHITS AND GIGGLES, AND AT FIRST I HATED IT! I DIDN’T GET IT. BUT THEN I STARTED TALKING TO YOU AND I STARTED GETTING TO KNOW YOU AND IT MADE SENSE! YOU MADE SENSE TO ME, SPENCER! AFTER SEVENTEEN YEARS OF FUCKING CONFUSION, YOU MADE SENSE! GOD, ASH AND I ARE LIKE SAME PERSON IN SOME WAYS! WE’RE BOTH FUCKED UP BY OUR PARENTS, COMPLETELY LOST, AND LOOKING FOR THAT LITTLE WHITE LIGHT—THAT OPEN HAND THAT’S JUST HANGING THERE, WAITING FOR US TO GRAB IT! AND THAT’S WHAT YOU WERE TO ME! THAT HAND!” Casey bellowed, angry tears coursing down her reddened cheeks. She couldn’t breathe, it was all coming to fast. Her ribs seared in pain, and her leg hurt more than ever. It was awhile before she looked up, she had been so consumed by her own guilt she hadn’t noticed the air change. As dark as it was, she could still make out the outstretched arm before and the expectant hand attached to it.  And by firefly light, she grabbed hold
