    You (Part the Fifty-Ninth)

She heaved another sigh as she finally dealt with the real reason she’d left. Sure, it had been because she’d been afraid of the abrupt shift in her best friend’s personality, and the jealousy still didn’t sit well. Yet the main reason she’d left, the one that she hadn’t told Alice, was that she was simply terrified she’d fall just as fast if she reciprocated…and then she’d get left when Alice found someone better. She’d walked away more to spare her own heart than Alice’s sanity, and it made her feel incredibly guilty to admit it, even to herself.

“Mumpfhsislonslfins,” Alice mumbled suddenly in her sleep, interrupting Dana’s reverie. It was all Dana could do not to laugh. For some reason, she found the fact that Alice mumbled unintelligible things in her sleep the most adorable thing ever. And although Alice seemed to go right back to a coma-like sleep immediately afterward, she’d effectively stopped whatever doubts Dana might have been having with the prospect of marriage being too soon.

She’d been speaking honestly the day before when she told Alice that none of the recovery stuff mattered. And laying there with her, holding her so close that she doubted air could pass between them, she realized that she’d been right. None of the bullshit they’d been using as excuses made any difference whatsoever. Hell, they wouldn’t have before the cancer, and after…well, it sort of shamed her that they’d been an issue at all. This was the only place she ever wanted to wake up, and none of the fears or apprehensions in the world could change that.

Not that it meant their respective recoveries weren’t important to her anymore. No, instead they were at the front of her mind. More than anything, Dana wanted to be able to live a relatively normal life with Alice, especially after all they’d been through. She realized that somewhere in her mind she’d been hoping for that since the day they met, and that desire had only increased the longer they’d known each other. She wanted them to be able to come home to one another at the end of a long day, and have each others’ presence cheer them both up. And for the first time since their relationship had gone sour more than a year ago, Dana believed they could have it without having to fight tooth and nail to stave off the darkness.

    1. This was very romantic and sweet. The thought of Dana having that ring for Alice ready since such a long time means a lot. Loved it. I hope the next update will bring us more happy news as well. Great update!

    2. So, this is where sensible people run off and compose their thoughts before leaving a rambling comment…but I’m not sensible. I literally took a big deep breath before I started reading in anticipation of Dana’s results…I’m feeling a little short of air here! This chapter was great. It was sweet and tender and romantic and well just great basically. What nonsense you talk about not being good at this when you’re amazing at it. Is it greedy to ask for more already?

    3. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE…This is wierd but I had a feeling Dana has always had a ring for Alice…LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! MT you totally deserved accolades for your writing, but you should know you are #1 in my book!!!! You Rock!!!

    4. Another excellent chapter, MT! Sorry to hear you were blocked. But, if this is how you write when you have that problem, then maybe it’s a good thing! This was such a sweet chapter. And, again, the communication between the two is amazing. I love that fact that both girls are starting to think of the future. It’s interesting that it took another health scare to get them to think beyond the limitations of Dana’s health — if that makes sense. I absolutely adore Dana’s proposal. Just perfect — so Dana. BTW: I need me a Dana alarm clock. Does Brookstone carry those? ;-D Thanks, MT!!

    5. me likey…. No. More like I LOVE it! I really miss Dana and Alice together, i thought I’d survive by turning around but I just can’t. Now I feel shamed of why I even thought about it. :( Forgive me please my fellow Danish….ers? ees? Anyway, I just wanted to say tat I missed Danish and thank you cos through fan fiction, I can still have that ya know? You’re an awesome writer MT. thanks I hope Dane is gonna be okay
