Windows of oppurtunity – chp 6

“Cameron it just isn’t a good idea” said Lena, determined to make a stand.

“Lena..Lena pleaseone more chance” his voice oozed with persuasion “We can make this work”

“No” Lena considered hanging up, but it would only ensue with another phone call, and another and another.  She sighed inwardly and slumped a little more on the wall, oblivious of watching eyes “I can’t do this anymore Cameron.  I won’t let you do this anymore”

“Do what.love youcare for you.come on Lena, everyone deserves a chance”

Lena detected an irritation in his voice, as much as he was breaking her down, she was breaking him.  He considered her easy prey, she’d allowed him to get a little too close, opened up to him a little too much and unwittingly given him the tools to break her down.

“I think I’ve given you enough chances”

Shane watched with growing discomfort.  Lena almost seemed to curl into herself as she continued in the conversation.  A weakening of her stature as her shoulder raised in a sigh and her head shook slightly.  Shane felt embarrassed at her own presence and wondered whether to retreat back into the kitchen, and act as though she hadn’t eavesdropped on the conversation Lena was having.

She jumped slightly as Lena moved suddenly, straightening up, and familiarly running her hand through her hair pushing it back from her face with a roll of the eyes and dropped the phone from her ear and rested it at her chest for a moment.  She also jumped in surprise as she turned and saw Shane standing at the doorway of the kitchen.

Shane jumped into defence mode of her actions uncertain how to explain.

“God sorryI justI was going to leaveand then you were hereand” she said in a low tone, tripping over every word wondering how to explain herself

Lena waved a hand dismissing the need for an explanation and raised the handset to her ear once more.

“Cameron.I have to goI have company”

With that she hung up and dropped her hand to her side wearily.

“I know it isn’t any of my business” started Shane, taking a few steps along the hall

“Boyfriend, obviously an obsessive one as I’m beginning to find out” jumped in Lena standing up from the wall.

“I was going to ask why you keep answering to him” replied Shane

Lena smiled and set the phone of the hall table, looking down at her feet pondering on the question for a moment.

“God I have no idea” she said shaking her head “The price you pay for letting someone get too close I guess.  Answering numerous phone calls begging you to give them one more chance”

    “Men can be such”

“*****” Said Lena folding her arms and shaking her head “Pricks, Dicks…  Unfourtunately some of us are cursed with finding them highly attractive and welcome them with open arms into relationships only to be broken later.  Then again I assume women can love you as well as break you just the same as a man can”

“I never let anyone get that close to me to find out” said Shane

“I never did, let my guard down, thought he could be the one, bing bang boom, here I am again” said Lena, raising her arms out from her sides for a moment before folding them again.
