Windows of oppurtunity – chp 6
There was a momentary lapse of silence as the two sipped at the bitter thick liquid and they both savoured the intense taste of the expresso. It was one of those moments when true friendships form, those moments when you don’t remember when it happened only your glad it did. Lena set her cup on the counter and glanced over at Shane, who seemed happy enough to sip and savour the blend. Obviously another coffee fiend thought Lena.
“So Shane, what do you do?” she asked, propping her elbow on the counter and leaning her head on her upheld hand “Apart from rescue peoples mobile phones”
Shane turned a little on her chair and Lena was again momentarily caught off guard by the look in her eyes, the slight upturn of the lips. It wasn’t menacing, it was one of intent, and Lena was intrigued yet wary.
“I’m a hairdresser” replied Shane and the look was gone, to be replaced with a glint as she smiled
“Oh, any particular Salon?” asked Lena, picking up the small cup before her once more, an excuse for her to ponder a moment.
“I’m kinda morefreelance you could say” said Shane
“Ah right, me too” replied Lena before taking another sip of the expresso.
“You’re a hairdresser?” asked Shane, with a slight furrow of the eyebrows
“Oh no, sorry” said Lena, shaking her head and sitting up once more “I’m a writer journalist, well reviewer…”
She shook her head at her own ditzy, babbling answer and set her cup and then both hands on the counter before taking a breath and looking squarely at Shane.
“I write reviews on theatre shows and films” she said with a sigh.
“Ah I see” said Shane holding in a small laugh
Lena smiled holding in a chuckle of her own and rolled her eyes and shrugged her shoulders.
“Surprising consider I’m such a ditz at conversation” she giggled with thoughts revolving round the many occasion she’d raised a few brows in confusion
Shane didn’t reply but merely picked up her expresso and took a long drink. The shrill ring of the phone broke through any continuing conversation. Shane watched as Lena ran a hand through her hair pushing it behind her ears and gave the phone a stern eye as she sighed. She still couldn’t pinpoint the reason why Lena intrigued her so much. Even in this moment, watching her seemed to grab her whole attention. The answering machine had kicked in and Lena glanced sideways muttering and ”excuse me” before she hopped down from her stool and walked over to the phone. A male voice was speaking from the machine.
