    The date begins…

    “Mmm, there’s a chevre fondue listed with the appetizers,” Tina said. She then quoted from the menu. “Served with French bread, sun dried tomato compote and balsamic reduction.”

    “We’re starting with that,” Bette agreed. “I think the challenge with the entrees is narrowing it down to only one that I want.”

    “We might have to come back here, sooner rather than later,” Tina said. “What are you leaning towards for your meal?”

    “The duck two ways or the lamb shank,” Bette replied. “Both sound decadent.”

    “That’s the two I was trying to decide between,” Tina smiled. “Have the lamb and I’ll have the duck and we can share.”

    “So, both rich hearty meals,” Bette flipped to the wine list. “I’m thinking we need a rich hearty red.”

    Tina moved to the back of her menu as well.

    “What do you think of the 2003 Vina Robles Syrah?” Bette suggested. In the past she would have stated their wine selection, not asked for Tina’s input.

    “I’ve never had wine from that vineyard,” Tina replied. “Let’s give it a try.”

    Their server approached the table and the evening was well on its way.

    Their plates had just been taken away and they were both on their last glass of wine.

    “That was fantastic,” Tina exclaimed. She looked at Bette beside her. “Great first date.”

    “It’s not over yet,” Bette said, the air of mystery having returned to her plans for the evening.

    “Hold still,” Tina reached and brushed Bette’s bottom lip with her thumb. “Your lipstick was a little smudged. I’m not used to seeing you as anything less than perfect.”

    “I hardly think you of all people see me as perfect,” Bette replied, reaching across and letting her hand linger on Tina’s forearm.

    “Accepting that we’re both flawed might be the realization we need to make some progress,” Tina replied. “Even after everything, I just see the good.”

    “There’s a lot of good between us,” Bette said. “Subtle communication, common values…”

    “Physical attraction,” Tina offered as she once again placed her hand on Bette’s thigh.

    “Do I even have to mention what that does to me?” Bette asked quietly.

    “Likely the same thing it does for me,” Tina replied.

    “We’re still committed to celibacy?” Bette clarified.

    “For a while,” Tina replied. “Rather than depend on that subtle silent communication, I think we have to actually talk.”

    “Are you ready for the next part of our date?” Bette asked.

    “Ready when you are,” Tina said.

    “I’ll go take care of the bill,” Bette stood from the table, and leaned in to confide. “I’m excited for what’s next.”

    “I’m always excited for what’s next,” Tina replied.

    “And I guess that sums up why we’re both willing to try again,” Bette replied.

    Tina watched her departure, and only once Bette turned the corner did she return to her wine. It was already the best date she’d ever had and it wasn’t even over yet.

    36. Aww. So far I’m really digging the subtle changes. Bette asked for Tina’s opinion. Tina being more than willing to boost Bette’s self-esteem. That stuff mixed with the old comfortable, knowing, understanding parts of their relationship feels exciting yet familiar. Can’t wait for more.

    38. Great update JKS! You should have written the script for the TV show. You are making more sense, with B&T getting to talk to each other.
