    The date begins…

    Bette held the passenger door open for Tina to climb in before making her way to the other side of the car. Once she put the key in the ignition, classic jazz flowed through the stereo speakers. Bette put her hand on the gearshift, but before she could move it, Tina placed her hand on top.

    “Wait,” Tina instructed. “Not just yet.”

    Bette took her foot off the brake and turned to face her.

    “We’re treating this as if it’s a real first date, right?” Tina asked.

    “Of course,” Bette replied, bewildered. “Starting from scratch.”

    “And would you discuss problems from previous relationships on a first date?”

    “That would be a bad first date,” Bette replied.

    “So let’s just have fun tonight,” Tina said. “Perhaps save any serious discussion for another day?”

    “I’m in total agreement,” Bette replied. “I think we have to get to know each other again anyway. We’ve both changed.”

    Tina lifted her hand from Bette’s as a silent signal to continue. They were soon on their way.

    “Where are we going?” Tina asked as they pulled out of the driveway.

    “It’s a surprise,” Bette smiled. “Remember, you said I could plan tonight and you can plan our second date.”

    “But if you don’t give up some hints tonight, then I won’t offer any for when we go out again,” Tina reasoned with Bette’s need to have information, even if it was in the future.

    “Hints, I will offer,” Bette agreed. “We are going out for dinner to start with.”

    “Good, I assumed there would be a meal,” Tina replied.

    “And we’ve never been there, but we often talked about going,” Bette said.

    “Then it’s either Literati, or Bin 941,” Tina replied after pondering for a moment.

    Bette was silent.

    “Okay, my hints were too specific,” she finally stated, chagrined that the mystery was gone from this particular surprise.

    “And I bet it’s Bin 941, because of the wine list,” Tina concluded, glancing over as she gave her prediction.

    She saw Bette wince and knew she was right.

    “We both may have changed, but there are still components that are predictable,” Tina said. She reached across the car and rested her hand just above Bette’s knee. “Is that okay?”

    Bette looked across at her.

    36. Aww. So far I’m really digging the subtle changes. Bette asked for Tina’s opinion. Tina being more than willing to boost Bette’s self-esteem. That stuff mixed with the old comfortable, knowing, understanding parts of their relationship feels exciting yet familiar. Can’t wait for more.

    38. Great update JKS! You should have written the script for the TV show. You are making more sense, with B&T getting to talk to each other.
