The Very Thought of You, Chapter 12

More times than I could count I wondered what I was doing and questioned the sanity of the whole day.  It all seemed like something surreal and too cinematic, something someone makes up to spice up a story.  Even on the train I couldn’t sit still, shifting repeatedly in my seat, bouncing my legs, or getting up and walking around.  I fiddled with everything in my purse, played with my hair and checked my make-up.  I inspected my fingernails and jewelry and finally dozed a little.  The train’s slow arrival at the station was almost painful, but it finally ground to a stop.  I shuffled off with the other passengers and made my way to the street.  I tried to slow my pace but to no avail, and quickly I found myself at the corner.  I summoned a taxi and directed the driver to Central Park.

When I got out of the cab, I made my way along the winding paths, working my way up to 72nd Street.  I turned and headed towards where I’d found out the fountain was.  I followed the winding sidewalk as it made its gentle way uphill.  It eventually came to the top.  I made my way slowly down one of the staircases that led to the angelically topped fountain.  The picture was set beautifully before a lake filled with rowboats.  There, sitting on the edge of the fountain, amidst the crowds of people filling the autumn sun-soaked opening, was Bette.

She perched on the edge of the fountain, her back halfway to me.  She studied the angel of the fountain, regarding the wings and gown.  Her feet rested on the inside edge, one hand trailing in the water absentmindedly.  She occasionally paused to listen in on a passing conversation or to study people’s interactions.  She checked her watch then turned to glance at the staircase.  In that moment, our eyes met.  I saw her intake of breath as she stood and stayed there.  I beamed as I closed the distance between us, descending the stairs as I heard my world come crashing down around me.

She was all I could see, all I could hear, all I could smell as her lily of the valley perfume stole over my senses and confused all rational thought.  In that moment, I knew.  I wanted to be the one she housed in the deepest, darkest, most secret part of her heart, the one to walk with her even when we weren’t together.  But I knew that, first, I had to hear her voice in person, watch how her lips moved, see her facial expressions.  I knew I had to compete, in a day, all the steps necessary to falling realistically in love.

    1. Aaargh pleeease don’t tell me you stopped there?! But I guess I really can’t blame you- you did warn us that you’ll use your new-found power over us for evil! :D and of course, thank you for granting my servitude :) This was as touching as always, but a few things stood out to me: the inability to sleep next to someone else when you know the one for you is out there; the clarity with which *you* see seemingly insignificant things about the characters, giving them more depth (the light-of-day logic, Bette pausing to listen to other conversations); *and* I love your use of the description ‘angelically topped fountain’- makes me think of Angelica :) lastly, I was glad to see the waiting for them to meet was not in vain. Your description of that precise moment left nothing more to be desired. I can imagine what such a moment would feel like **nodding** well done indeed, NY, and thank you. Eagerly awaiting the next chapter

    2. Yes, they are finally meeting. Okay now in your notes you said that “Tina would NEVER back out on Bette”, so does that mean it was because of Bette that Tina ended up with Henry. Or did you mean that Tina wouldn’t back out of meeting Bette. Well like you said I guess I will just have to wait and see. You are getting to be a tease NY, but I still love your story. Thanks and eagerly awaiting your next chapter!

    3. Oh, I can’t wait for the next chappie… Did the sleep deprivation make you ill, NY? Get better, mate… cause I really need you posting the story I’ve come to love.

    4. There is to reality to falling in love except the reality that to fall in love you have to let yourself go…completely. It seems in your story that Tina falls short of doing just that in the end. It’s so sad, but I’ll continue to read your story as you lead us on your/their journey. Your writing is so good and the story so sad that I can’t bear to stop. So sorry to hear you’re sick – gargling with salted water and using throat lozenges/spray that will numb your throat (like sucrets or chloraseptic) might help. The first line of this chapter had me laughing out loud and asking myself “Only ONE night??” LOL!!! Hope you feel better soon NY!

    5. See, I wouldn’t be as cool as Bette. I’d do that stupid phony gun point thing with my hands and say, “Tina?” Yes, I’ve done that before but in my defense I was only 17. No excuse for it now but meh.

    6. I don’t know NY, despite your protests of not being a romantic, you sure are coming across that way,! lol “Me thinks the lady doth protests too much! lol I am glad that Tina and Bette have at least made eye-contact. Now I await as to why this did not last. Was it Tina’s fear? something else? I am still on that mountaintop and I still love it. Post soon! BTW- I think I will save my Tina choking moment for when I learn why she still choose Henry. lol Soory Lisa Kudrow was weird!

    7. That is worth waiting for. a whole day to fall in love I dont believe so . They are so in love now Will Tina go back to to Henry after this I think now I never dress for my husband, Only my self. It was me wearing the clothes now anyone else. love how Bette just was standing and smiling T HER/ THANKS
