The Very Thought of You, Chapter 12

One night I finally couldn’t lie next to Henry anymore and went out in the backyard.  I sat by the pool, staring at the smooth surface.  It seemed to taunt me as it evoked more memories of Bette and how she said she would stand in front of the water for hours, oblivious to her surroundings, never noticing how much time had passed.  Now I understood that she was connecting, drawing peace from the water that she would ration out in her day-to-day activities when she walked away.

As I sat thinking of her, I let the tranquility of the water infiltrate my frenzied, confused spirit, let it smooth the desperation that threatened to surface.  Finally, as the sun started to come up, I tore my eyes away and went back into the bedroom, getting in bed as far away from Henry as I could.  I slipped into sleep, reluctantly allowing myself to, at last, think of Bette openly and miss her body, her laughter, her crooked smile, her hair.  That early morning, for the first time in a long time, I slept soundly.  It had been months since I had gotten a full night’s sleep, and I knew when it had started, around the same time it did every year.  Late September.  The anniversary of the day we finally met.  The annual marking of the day we fell in love.

The night before our meeting date, I was a mess.  I lay down early, desiring plenty of sleep so at least I wouldn’t look tired.  I’d chosen a low cut, ivory shirt to accent my hair and collarbone area, two attributes I knew she loved.  Fitted jeans, low heels, simple jewelry.  I laid it all out, knowing I would need every last minute of sleep I could manage.  I tried everything to fall asleep, succeeding only in starting a dozen activities.  The room was strewn with abandoned distractions by the time I finally fell asleep, thoughts of her still lingering, causing me to start awake a number of times during the night.

My alarm sounded a good three hours before I needed to be at the train station, allotting me plenty of time to organize and get ready.  My light-of-day logic told me I should trade the shirt I had chosen for a more conservative one, but I silenced it, sticking with the outfit and jewelry I’d laid out.  I carefully prepared my hair and make-up, taking more care than I had in who knows how long.  Before I knew it, I was rushing to my car, speeding to the train station and running to the platform.  Mere minutes after I boarded, the train began to make its slow way to the city.  It seemed to crawl as the minutes slowly slipped away, leaving me anxious and nervously excited.

    1. Aaargh pleeease don’t tell me you stopped there?! But I guess I really can’t blame you- you did warn us that you’ll use your new-found power over us for evil! :D and of course, thank you for granting my servitude :) This was as touching as always, but a few things stood out to me: the inability to sleep next to someone else when you know the one for you is out there; the clarity with which *you* see seemingly insignificant things about the characters, giving them more depth (the light-of-day logic, Bette pausing to listen to other conversations); *and* I love your use of the description ‘angelically topped fountain’- makes me think of Angelica :) lastly, I was glad to see the waiting for them to meet was not in vain. Your description of that precise moment left nothing more to be desired. I can imagine what such a moment would feel like **nodding** well done indeed, NY, and thank you. Eagerly awaiting the next chapter

    2. Yes, they are finally meeting. Okay now in your notes you said that “Tina would NEVER back out on Bette”, so does that mean it was because of Bette that Tina ended up with Henry. Or did you mean that Tina wouldn’t back out of meeting Bette. Well like you said I guess I will just have to wait and see. You are getting to be a tease NY, but I still love your story. Thanks and eagerly awaiting your next chapter!

    3. Oh, I can’t wait for the next chappie… Did the sleep deprivation make you ill, NY? Get better, mate… cause I really need you posting the story I’ve come to love.

    4. There is to reality to falling in love except the reality that to fall in love you have to let yourself go…completely. It seems in your story that Tina falls short of doing just that in the end. It’s so sad, but I’ll continue to read your story as you lead us on your/their journey. Your writing is so good and the story so sad that I can’t bear to stop. So sorry to hear you’re sick – gargling with salted water and using throat lozenges/spray that will numb your throat (like sucrets or chloraseptic) might help. The first line of this chapter had me laughing out loud and asking myself “Only ONE night??” LOL!!! Hope you feel better soon NY!

    5. See, I wouldn’t be as cool as Bette. I’d do that stupid phony gun point thing with my hands and say, “Tina?” Yes, I’ve done that before but in my defense I was only 17. No excuse for it now but meh.

    6. I don’t know NY, despite your protests of not being a romantic, you sure are coming across that way,! lol “Me thinks the lady doth protests too much! lol I am glad that Tina and Bette have at least made eye-contact. Now I await as to why this did not last. Was it Tina’s fear? something else? I am still on that mountaintop and I still love it. Post soon! BTW- I think I will save my Tina choking moment for when I learn why she still choose Henry. lol Soory Lisa Kudrow was weird!

    7. That is worth waiting for. a whole day to fall in love I dont believe so . They are so in love now Will Tina go back to to Henry after this I think now I never dress for my husband, Only my self. It was me wearing the clothes now anyone else. love how Bette just was standing and smiling T HER/ THANKS
