The Trouble With Love Chapter Eleven

It was Saturday and almost a week since Tina had spoken to Shane about Bette’s return to work. She knew that she should have called Bette to make sure that she was OK but something in the back of her mind told her it would be better for Bette to get back into a routine before talking to her again, especially as every time they talked they inevitably got onto to subjects that they both found difficult and upsetting. Bette had called once, on Wednesday, but Tina had screened that call. She felt bad about that, guilty almost, as she knew Bette probably needed some reassurance but also strangely comforted by the fact that Bette’s impatient streak had not completely deserted her. Tina knew that they both had to make some changes but she didn’t want Bette to change out of all recognition.

There was, however, another reason why Tina hadn’t call Bette. She couldn’t get her conversation with Shane out of her head. The words ‘true love’ were still ringing in her ears five days later. Tina knew all the implications of accepting what Shane said to be true and she didn’t know if she wanted to confront yet. What if what Bette and she had really was true love she thought to herself as she sat on her hotel bed. If that were right then she really would only find contentment in Bette, and with this thought in her mind she dialled Bette’s number.

    “Hey T. How are you?”

“I’m good and you sound in good spirits considering you just spent the last week at work.”

“So you spoke to Shane then I take it?” asked Bette already knowing the answer to her question.

“I told you I would. Bette, I didn’t do it to check up on you. I just needed to know that you would follow through on what you said you would do. That’s important to me, for us to mean the things that we say. I hope you understand that.”

“I do, more now than ever.”

“So are you going to tell me how it was? I hope you and Franklin haven’t had a fight in your first week.” Tina was laughing now at Bette inability to get along with the members of her board.
