The Sound Track of Our Lives

“I really don’t want to be doing this.”

“Bette, really it will be fun.”

“Charlotte, I am waiting for a phone call.”

Charlotte turns to the Bette. “She has your cell phone number Bette.”

Bette grips the steering wheel tighter, her knuckles turning white in the process. “I know.” She looks up startled, “How did you know?”

“I haven’t known you very long but I know that most of the time you are thinking about Tina. Secondly, Alice mentioned that you were both acting strangely.”

Bette eyes grow wider, accentuating the dark brown eyes, “Tina is acting bizarrely?”

                “According to Alice.”

Bette whispers, with a death grip still on the wheel, “I didn’t mean to upset her. I didn’t think she would be awake.”

Charlotte warily peers at her friend, “Please tell me you are not stalking her.”

“What? No! After you left, I had a dream. It was a very vivid dream.” The color rises to Bette’s mocha cheeks giving the other woman a clue as to what kind of dream it was. “It was so real that when I woke up I reached out for her. She wasn’t there, of course, but I could get back to sleep. I could feel her there. I know this won’t make sense but because I could feel her presence, her absence was all the more acute. I need some sort of outlet so I called the Delilah show. I requested a song.”

                “She heard it?”

“Yes, she called me. She didn’t speak at first. I pleaded with her to talk to me, she said she couldn’t. She feels like she can’t talk to me. Why am I so surprised? It isn’t like we were talking before I fucked up. I promised I would be here when she was ready to talk.” The women sat in silence each lost in her own thoughts. Charlotte was absorbing what Bette had just told her and Bette was replaying the phone call in her head.

                “What song did you request?”

                “Breathe by Melissa Etheridge.”

Charlotte nodded in approval, “You are very good with that. Let’s go get a table before it gets too crowded.”
