The return of Love’s Calling – 5: Reflections

As Bette and Tina walked out of view of the gang, Alice had to voice her thoughts.

    Alice
: (smugly smiling and looking at Dana and Shane) “Told you it had to be a woman, a beautiful one at that. Let’s go back in and spy on them.”

Shane: (shaking her head) “No Al, she really might be just a client and if you mess that up Bette will kick your *****.”

    Alice
: (reaching as if to open the door) “I’m not scared of Bette.”

    Shane: (reaching out and stopping
    Alice
from opening the door) “Give it a rest Al. I don’t want to have to play referee.”

    Alice
: (not wanting to leave) “But”

    Shane: “Forget it Al!”

    Dana and Shane grab
    Alice
by the arm and pull her along to get to dinner.

Inside the gallery, Bette and Tina began to slowly make their way through the different sections of the gallery, as Bette talked about the pieces, the artists and what she loved about each piece of work. Tina tried to listen intently to what Bette was saying but somehow Tina found herself paying more attention to Bette than what she was saying. She couldn’t help but notice the excitement in her eyes, in her voice and feel her love of artTina found that as mesmerizing as the woman herself.

Tina struggled through most of the rest of the tour trying to focus on what Bette was saying. It was only as they were nearing the last section of the gallery, which contained many beautiful sculptures, that Tina was able to pull herself away from Bette long enough to truly enjoy the beautiful art in front of her. There stood a piece that caught her eye. It was a very unique sculpture that had been created from a combination of stained glass, mirror glass and some sort of metal that in some places gave off a rainbow effect while in others it gave off gray hues. Tina was so engrossed in the sculpture that she didn’t hear Bette approach her.

Bette: (approaching Tina and stepping close to her) “Do you like this piece?”

Tina: (turning to look at Bette surprised at how near she was standing to her) “It isvery beautiful and unique.”

Bette: (looking at the sculpture and then at Tina) “It’s one of my favorites. The artist has named it ‘Reflections’. It is almost as if it reflects what we see in ourselves at different moments in our life. Sometimes we can see ourselves clearly while at others, we have moments where everything seems gray or everything is beautiful like the colors in the stained glass and sometimes we can be so happy in our lives that we can only see the rainbow. You were right when you said it is very beautiful but I have to admit I don’t think it has ever been more beautiful than right at this moment with me seeing you reflected in it.”

Tina: (blushing at Bette’s words and trying desperately to find the words to change the subject before she did something crazy) “Souh you said you needed to explain about Friday night.”

Bette: (looking in to Tina’s eyes and seeing confusion there but opting not to move away from her) “Yes I do. You see I think I was the person you came there to meet.”

Tina: “Why would you think that?”

Bette: “There is a two fold answer to that question. The first part of the answer is that I believe that you and I made arrangements via telephone to meet that night at the restaurant. You see, I think you were trying to call someone else but you must have misdialed and wound up talking to me. “

Tina: (talking out loud to herself) “So it was you. It was your voice I remembered.”

Tina: “and the second part of the answer is?”

Bette: (looking in to Tina’s eyes) “I think that it really was fate that we meet.”

Tina: (staring at Bette and finding her body responding by moving closer to her) “Do you really believe that?”

Bette: (leaning in a little closer to Tina) “Yes I do. I think it was meant for us to get to know each other. Do you think that maybe we could spend some more time together tonight? Maybe get some dinner and talk?”

Tina: (now unable to focus on anything except Bette’s lips as she starts to lean in as if to kiss her) “I really would”

At that moment Tina’s cell phone rang and she reluctantly pulled away from Bette to answer it.

Tina: (before answering her cell phone) “I’m sorry. I have to take this because it could be about one of the films I have been working on.”

Tina: (answering her cell phone) “Tina Kennard.”

Voice on the other end of the line: “Ma’am this is the L.A.P.D and we have been called out to your place of residence because your alarm is going off. Could you meet us there so we can check it out?”

Tina: (upset to hear that her apartment may have been broken in to) “I’ll be right there.”

Tina hung up the phone and turned to Bette.

Tina: (very upset over the phone call, all she could think about was getting home) “I’m sorry.but I have to go. I have to meet someone.”

With that Tina hurriedly walked out and left Bette standing there. Once again, Bette Porter was left stunned, alone and wondering what had just happened. She stood there for several moments replaying the events of the evening in her mind before she turned and headed to her office to gather up her things for the night.

As she drove home, she found herself feeling confused and little depressed. Her thoughts bounced back and forth between ‘if Tina’s cell phone hadn’t gone off when it did, we would have wound up in each other’s arms” and “she walked out on you once again.’

After she got home, she considered trying to catch up with Alice, Dana and Shane but she really didn’t want to have to deal with
    Alice
‘s persistent questions. Instead, she decided she would rather spend the rest of the evening relaxing and maybe catching up on some work. She went in and took a shower and afterwards put on a pair of her silk pajamas before she headed to her kitchen to try and find something to eat. She opened the refrigerator door and looked in trying to find something that appealed to her but nothing did. As she shut the door she sighed and thought, ‘This evening certainly didn’t turn out the way I hoped it would.’

Meanwhile Tina had met with the officer who had called her and Tina had determined that nothing had been taken from her apartment. In fact, it didn’t appear as if anything inside had been touched at all. The officer told Tina that sometimes an alarm will go off for no reason but it was better to be safe than sorry.

After the officer left, Tina was relieved that nothing in her apartment had been disturbed but she felt really bad that she had walked out on Bette the way she had. ‘She probably thinks you are crazy,’ she thought. She knew that she needed to apologize to Bette for walking out the way she did, so she grabbed her purse and pulled out the cell phone that was her direct line to Bette and she pushed the number for Bette’s cell phone and she waited.

Bette: (not recognizing the number on her cell she opted to answer it formally) “Bette Porter.”

    Tina: “Hi.”

Bette: (recognizing Tina’s voice she softened her voice) “Hi.”

Tina: “I wanted to call and apologize about walking out on you the way I did tonight. It was an emergency and I had no choice but to leave.”

Bette: (showing concern) “I hope everything is okay.”

Tina: (smiling at hearing the concern in Bette’s voice) “It is now. The police thought my apartment had been broken in to because the alarm was going off but it was a false alarm.”

Bette: (smiling at the realization of why Tina had walked out on her the way she did) “I’m really glad everything is okay.”

Tina: (shyly) “Anyway I wanted to call and apologize and to tell you that I am sorry that wethat we didn’t get to finish our conversation.”

Bette: (smiling as her heart began to flutter) “So am I. So would you like to finish what you were about to say? I believe you had started out with I really would”

Tina: (smiling at Bette remembering her actual words and just going for it) “I really would like to have dinner with you.”

Bette: (jumping for joy inside but trying to play it cool with Tina) “When?”

Tina: (smiling and shaking her head because she can’t believe she is doing this) “Considering I have walked out on you two times. You name the time and placeI will try my best to be there.”

Bette: (trying to control the emotion in her voice) “Now. I want you to come and meet me now. Will you do that, Tina?”
