“Hello, it’s Tina Kennard calling.”
Bette smiled into the phone, holding it to her shoulder as she continued to work from home. It had been a very productive day, and coupled with the fact that Tina was calling served to put her in an excellent mood. “Hello Tina Kennard. You’ve reached Bette Porter.”
“I do not sound that robotic,” Tina laughed on the other end. “Sorry, I just … I don’t know. Maybe you know more than one Tina …? I don’t know.”
It was simply impossible not to like this woman, Bette reasoned to herself. Not that anyone would try. “It’s okay, Tina. I was just kidding.”
“So, how are you?”
“Missing you,” was Bette’s immediate reaction, followed by a wince of her own. She felt like an idiot, blurting something so honest so soon. “I mean …”
“Wow! We’re both a mess, aren’t we?” Tina giggled, giving Bette the sense of ease that she needed.
“I’m so glad you said it so I didn’t have to.”
“Mmm … your voice is nice.”
Bette smiled with mischief in her eyes, “Don’t purr like that.”
“Oh … okay …”
“No, it just … I like it.” Bette knew she was blushing, and was thankful Tina couldn’t see it. “Sorry. Anyway. I umm … I forgot why I called you.” She could feel tingles all over just thinking about what Tina’s body language must have been.
“Actually … I called you,” Tina teased.
At least they both could laugh at themselves.
Bette was the first to speak again. “Oh boy. Okay … well I had wanted to talk to you about the other night anyway.”
“About what I was wearing?”
“Don’t do this,” Bette pleaded, and her playful nature thankfully came through over the phone, evident by Tina’s laughter. “Please.”
“Alright, I won’t mention the way you look at me.”
Bette sighed, bringing her hand to her forehead.
“Or that I liked it.”
“Okay-about-what-I-was-saying …”
Tina giggled while Bette continued.
“… I just wanted you to know that I was … nervous too. I umm … I was actually kind of jealous.”
“No!” Tina teased, feigning surprise.
It had Bette laughing, so Tina continued.
“Hey, honestly I was really jealous too. All I could think about was you, Bette.”
