The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 2, Chapter 2)

The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 2, Chapter 2)
    PART TWO: MAUI

    Chapter 2

Mama’s Fish House in Paia, was very exclusive and very pricey. We entered by way of a cobblestone path that led us to a coconut grove which ended at a secluded beach. Way above it was the restaurant, a converted beach house with hinged windows that opened to let in the trade winds and offer a wonderful view through the trees to the ocean.

The interior was Polynesian in décor with lush plants and flowers placed appealingly here and there, plus assorted oil paintings adding color to the walls. The tables were covered with colorful tapa cloth and there were fresh cut flowers on each one. After we ordered a mai tai Bette got up to look at the paintings, in each of several rooms.

She came back when the mai tais did. They were absolutely classic with split colors of dark and light rum garnished with a pineapple spear, a slice of lime on the rim, an orchid floating on top and an umbrella.

Bette took her flower out of her glass and put it behind my ear so I reciprocated. She brought out her camera and we took pictures of each other, then asked the waitress to take one of us together, holding up our drinks.

We touched our glasses lightly with a toast. “Here’s to smiling a lot on Maui,” I offered. “And to thinking about the future instead of the past,” she added.

Unique at Mama’s was that all the fish on the menu were caught by their own fishermen with credit given per catch. We had fun just reading their unusual line-up of food, most of which we had never heard of before but we started with an interesting Sashimi salad in which was included Hana pohole fern, crispy won ton strips, Big Island Ogo and wasabi goat cheese served with roasted sesame dressing. Not bad for a starter.

For our entrées, Bette ordered Mahimahi, stuffed with lobster, crab and Maui onions and baked in a macadamia nut crust. Just so we could share tastes, my choice was Opah with portabella mushrooms and pureed Molokai sweet potatoes. We were not totally sure what we ordered but when it arrived it was absolutely beautiful to look at and fabulous to eat. Oh, and the portions were as inflated as our final bill.

    1. Your description of Mama’s brought back a lot of good memories. Before I went to Maui a friend told me about Mama’s and said, “its a little pricey.” After we went and I paid the bill, I went back to the hotel and e-mailed that friend telling her she had misled me–it was a lot pricey! Still, wouldn’t trade those memories for anything! And we also saw the sunrise from Mt. Haleakala (hope I spelled that right!) and it was spectacular! Thanks!

    2. Thanks sissee for this maui story, it seems to me that Maui is really a beautiful place to visit. Your description of the scenery are great. Can’t wait to see what future will hold for Bette and Sissee in Maui, and many other places…. love the adventures of B & S!! Thanks for giving us such pleasurable entertainment here with your fictional imagination.

    3. Thanks for the wonderful description of everything. Sissee seems ready for a relationship with Bette, trouble or not, & Bette seems to be more, I don’t know……cautious? Can’t wait for the next chapter. Are you back from your trip? Have a great Sunday!

    4. azmama, Always a pleasure to see you here. Thanks for your kind words and my best to you. P.S., Hope you aren’t melting in Arizona. It was 111 here on Friday and only 100 today. Regards.

    5. September, Thanks for the welcome back. You asked if Sissee will make the first move. Forgive me, but I have to say I am enjoying this story the second time around as if someone else wrote it, even though I do make changes to my own work here and there. But the romantic surfaces in me when it comes to just how they, shall we say, “unite” again. I know what’s coming and I really and truly love the scene.

    6. Welcome back. Great update. Bette seems a little holding back all through I think deep down she still got those feelings. Now I wonder will Sissee make the first move?

    7. Bette’s Babe, You are so sweet with your much appreciated encouragement. Yes, Bette and Sissee will be having quite a few adventures on Maui mixing simple pleasures with high drama. Thanks for being here.

    8. kerbergin47, Yes, I am back from my trip. The smoke from 800 Carlifornia forest fires (caused by lightning) brought me home early. It was really smoky up in the mountains. That’s okay, I can keep a closer handle on my story at home which means I am already preparing my next chapter. I edit what I wrote in 2006 but a lot of it stays as it was originally written. Thanks for the good Sunday wishes. I promise you I will have a great Sunday and here’s hoping you do too, my friend.

    9. Id18, Thanks for sharing your Mama’s experience. I can still see those fantastic drinks and the awesome food. It was almost too pretty to eat and drink. I am sure you will find more adventures here that will be familiar to you. It’s my favorite Hawaiian island.
