    She was so phenomenal with her lips, dropping those little kisses all over my face, into my ear, where she whispered, “Let’s take it really slow, baby,” and then moved on to my neck and breasts. I never got enough of her gentleness and tenderness, never enough of how willing she was to just make me feel warm and wonderful.

    “Me too.”

    “If you’re life had gone on like it was, you’d be here with Howie now, introducing Mary to Yale.”

    “But he’s not here, you are.”

    “Any regrets?”

    “No.”

    “None whatsoever?”

    “I never once wanted to turn back.” I expected her to kiss me but she only kept looking at me so I added, “You’ve always been the one for me.”

    “It just took a long time for it to happen.“

    “Do you have any regrets?”

    “No, my life is full now that we‘re together,” she said. “I never knew how lonely I was, even when I was connected with someone else.”

    “And I always had that ache for you.”

    She drew me to her tighter and pressed her head against mine. “I love you so much,” she whispered.

    “I love you too.”

    We kissed. It was a sweet and binding kiss. Warm, wonderful and lasting, holding each other so close it was as if no one in the world could ever come between us. No one; not ever. When we drew back from the kiss, she gave me another quick one and we both smiled, pulling away to do the things we had to do so that we could take that shower and crawl into bed.

    We unpacked methodically and made our telephone calls. It was already seven thirty on the west coast so when she called Angelica, Tina answered, home from work. While they were talking I called Charlie and then Kylie. Tina must have put their daughter on the phone because Bette always used a special voice for her, which was always cute, in a higher octave with short sentences. Then when she called her mom she had still another persona which was more of a bantering back and forth.

    Before long we were in the shower. It was meant for two people with plenty of room. We washed each other down, exchanging kisses in the process. I shampooed her hair, lathering it up and then rinsing it clear. She shampooed mine and rinsed it. We smiled a lot and felt very close to each other, especially when we washed each other’s intimate places, feeling good and right about who we were and what we were doing.
