“No way Bette!” I admonished.
“Well, you heard me say I wasn’t sure, that I’d let him know.”
“Yes, but I didn’t know what you were talking about.”
“He said he ran into Tina at a studio banquet and he asked her to go. There’s no way she’d do it but she said it sounds more like something Bette would do. He said he wants to take five people up and he was having trouble finding five that were brave enough.”
“No surprise, there.”
“He said he’s got three guys willing to do it but he wants two more. Would you consider it?”
“You know perfectly well, I can’t stand heights.”
“If I decide to go he’s asked me to find someone else.”
“I forbid you to go!”
“Oh come on, Sis. It sounds exhilarating!”
“Yeah right! I’ve never been able to figure out why someone would jump out of a perfectly good airplane in the first place Why would you want to go free falling through the air with nothing under you but space?”
“It’s not free falling he’s talking about. It’s a tandem thing.”
“That’s suppose to make it safer?”
“Well yes, I’d be strapped to an instructor.”
“Please don’t do it Bette.”
“Why?”
“Because it terrifies me. Something bad might happen to you and I would forever blame myself if I didn’t try to talk you out of it.”
“You can come with me and see how safe it is.”
“People die doing that. Their parachutes don’t open or they crash-land in hard places and break arms and legs.”
“Google it.” She turned back to her laptop. “I’ll Google it.”
And so I lost her for the day. No, not just the day, for the rest of the trip. She was suddenly and totally preoccupied with skydiving. As she searched on the internet she yelled things out over her shoulder with an excitement and enthusiasm I felt threatened by. It took that closeness we had been feeling all weekend away.
I knew I was wrong. I knew I should be happy for her and support her in a new adventure but my resentment was greater than my joy. I could not believe it myself but I had to admit that I was pissed off because of skydiving. It broke our idyllic bubble.

a beautiful chapter sissee, as always..but Bette is so selfish in this chapter..sissee should not go skydiving if she’s not into it
Gummy Bear, I do believe that is exactly how Bette would have handled this because she was this way on TLW. We would be amused at how she was self-absorbed in her work and prattle on and on about it to Tina. We forgave her if that is what selfishness is, as I hope my readers will do. As for Sissee, she is just so friggin much in love with Bette that it becomes, “wither thou goest” kind of thing. I’d bet my money on Sissee going too. Smile.

Nunya, It’s nice to hear from you. I guess you knew where to find me. I have been super busy, trying to get things ready for a long trip. Not too much time to just chat with friends. You can be sure I won’t lose track of you though, especially when I am on the road I will have more time to write in the evenings. Thanks for stopping by and hope to hear from you again.
hey sissee! while i agree how selfish bette was, isn’t that just bette being bette and thats why i for one absolutely love this character and i totally agree with you sis that this is how she would be on the show…and as for your comment i’ve already forgiven her!! can’t wait to see how this plays out, pps!!
Mushy, I did a lot of research on this entire story from bull fighters to sex toys (somebody’s got to do it) but through it all, I really enjoyed this skydiving series because I know it is nothing I would ever personally do but I got a pretty good idea of what it’s like – and so will all of you.
I’m kinda with Gummy Bear on this one. I don’t think Bette is considering Sissee’s feelings at all. She’s all self-absorbed, & I know that’s just how she is, but I hope she’ll stop for a minute & talk to Sis about this. Have a great weekend!
Kbergin47, Well, it is what it is and I know this follows Bette’s patterns but trust me, it turns into an exciting adventure with a huge hitch.
