Talk to Me of Mendocino ~ Chapter 8
The nanny had been very apologetic when she called to tell Tina about the suite at the lodge. The unfortunate woman knew to apologize due to her keen awareness that Tina was on edge about the visit, though she had no idea of the source her employer’s discomfort. She hoped that she would not be blamed for mismanaging the situation. Tina accepted the nanny’s apologies. She had herself once experienced the whirlwind combination of five-year old Serafina Gold-Kennard and Meka Lerner-Porter. However, that didn’t change the fact that Tina was now in an awkward position, one she had tried to avoid.
Tina looked around the room. The redecorating she had done with the contents of the FedEx package had improved their surroundings, but it could not hide that the room was still in an inexpensive motel. She knew the room at the lodge would be a significant improvement. She shook her head in amusement, wondering if she could trace the exact moment that she had become such a snob.
Tina ran through her revised to-do list. She always traveled with one emergency “work appropriate” outfit, so she could be prepared for any unexpected event she might encounter. That one item would work for that night’s private dinner, if she needed to attend, but it wouldn’t work for the rest of the weekend. She needed more.
Tina had clothes in the large cedar-lined closet in her plane, but she had had the pilots bring the plane to a larger nearby airport so that it wouldn’t draw attention to her and her family’s presence. She weighed having the pilots return for a brief stop, but had a better idea. She reached for the phone.
Tina was annoyed when the phone rang eight times and was not answered. She tried a second time, and this time left a message.
“Andrew? It’s Tina. Call me. I need your immediate assistance.”
Tina frowned, feeling she had been somewhat imperious. She dismissed the thought. Andrew received a very generous salary and lived in comfort in a huge apartment overlooking Central Park—all so that he could assist the few days a month she or her family was in New York City. He had been Anna’s favorite student in an MFA class she had taught at UCLA as an adjunct professor. Tina had been skeptical. She couldn’t imagine a fledgling short-story writer as a good assistant. He was replacing a retired New York City police detective, hired away from the security service Tina began to employ when the death threats had begun. The detective had been lured by a shockingly generous salary and the chance for him and his wife to live and travel amidst luxury. Vince and Annamarie had stayed three years longer than the expected two years, through Angelica’s stay in New York as she established her filmmaking credibility far from her mother’s long Hollywood shadow. In New York, although everyone knew who Tina Kennard was, they didn’t necessarily know that she had a daughter named Angelica, and it was unlikely that anyone would connect “Angelica Porter” with her film producer mother. In contrast, LA was so incestuous that everyone probably even knew Angelica’s social security number. Tina remembered the argument when Angelica had announced her plans to move to New York.

Hey! Missed your posting and am happy to have gone on line at work (in a fit of frustration over some work-related nonsense and a sudden need to escape into LWord land fantasy) to find you had posted. Thanks for the character listing and ages– does this mean that Tina birthed Serafina at 57? Yikes. Perhaps a younger lover or a surrogate but, hey, the miracles of modern science… And she’s single now, right? You can see I am too lazy to go back and read! I am loving this story and love the idea of an older B&T–I know it just gets better! Owe you a call after the Book Expo-I am insanely busy until next week. Take good care. Lin
Hmmm…a rather hard-bitten Tina, but understandable given the threats she’s lived with. But does that account for the pettiness that shines through from time to time?
I agree with funnyone. Thanks for posting.
I have been waiting for your next update on this story!!! I am hooked…truly and completely hooked! Tina has a five year old at age 62?! Yikes!!! LOL Thanks…please hurry with the next chapter…please.
I have really missed your story. thanks for update thanks also for the list of characters.
I have missed this story as well. Thank you for updating. Really really am liking this story and all the assortment of characters. Thank you :)
INTRIGUINGLY SAD…MORE WHEN U CAN PLZ!!
Death threats… I don’t like that at all. I’m glad Tina’s wealthy enough to hire security, though. Her assistant, living on a cushy salary and in a cushy flat, really is in the position to have to jump when Tina says. He did well there to remember what he’s paid to do, but it would have been funny to see full-on Alpha Tina. I’m really glad you’ve posted, Spumoni, thanks. :)
Hey Spumoni!!! I just LOVE this story … thanks, too, for the cast of characters. I was SOO off on the kids’ ages. Hope you’re feelin’ better! PPS (as soon as you can)!
glad to see this story back…the listing of names certainly helped LOL
Had to go back and reread as a refresher to get my story bearings, this is still a brilliant story
Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! Uhm… Indeed it is sad to see how Tina has become such a snob, on her mature years. Plus, it is a shame that she is so seclusive and uptight. We understand that the death threats could contribute to the latter, but she has missed being social. We truly admire Angie’s resolve to succeed in New York, independent to her mom’s famous name. It seems Bette has kept her cool and has grown into a more grounded person. We love that fact. We are glad that the interaction between all brothers remains in good terms. Ah, dearest friend, we are SO hooked here. Hahaha Yep. This update was AMAZING. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lu & Marsh (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick and Tias Adoradas to Patpez)
