Bette didn’t know what to do with all of the boxes. Each was carefully labeled with a range of years and all 33 of them together totaled up her father’s life.
Melvin Porter was a meticulous man, though not a sentimental one. The boxes held papers, records of assorted transactions. There were a few letters, some received when he served during World War II and Korea, and military service records. His school records and the many awards he had received over a long medical career were placed in neatly labeled file folders. Bette imagined that if she looked into the boxes labeled for the years from 1967 until now, she would find a birth certificate, a vaccination history, report cards, school papers, her forensics certifications, and probably her letter of admission to Yale.
The tiny baby she cradled in her arms as she paced the house in the very early morning whimpered, breaking Bette’s reverie.
Bette whispered, rocking the baby as she spoke “What’s the matter, Boo? You have a nice clean and powdered tushie, yes you do. Your belly is nice and full with your mama’s milk. You are dressed in the most fetching stretchie, the finest courtier, the envy of every baby in West Hollywood. You are the most beautiful baby in the entire world. . You are the most loved baby in the entire universe. Yes you are.”
Angelica continued to whimper and Bette ran through the checklist she had memorized from the baby book.
Angelica continued her fussiness and Bette tried to think of what she could fix to make the tiny baby feel better.
Being in a moving car soothed the baby. Bette assessed whether she was awake enough to drive and was disappointed when she concluded she wasn’t. She rocked Angelica as she walked over to the desk. Holding the restless baby tightly against her chest with one arm, she used her other hand to do a quick computer search for ideas on putting a baby to sleep. She skipped past the first 8 pages, because she already had checked those websites and tested their methods. She sighed when, after ten minutes of searching, she found nothing that she hadn’t already tried.

Oh Spumoni…you gave us a wonderful mother’s day gift. Thank you! I love the part where Bette describes Angie’s features that are Tina’s. What tenderness you captured. So beautiful! Happy Mother’s day to you!
it was beautiful and sad and i loved this because it was much better than the nonsense of season 3…happy Mother’s day to all (including JB and LuH)
Deeply moving. Truly heartfelt. Simply brilliant. And you couldn’t have chosen a better song to capture the deep, abiding and nurturing love that envelopes this story. I’m not familiar with the title of that lovely lullaby until Bette mentioned that it was used in “Empire of the Sun”. I got teary eyed when I first heard that song and the powerful, haunting images that accompanied it in the film. And thanks to the link, I’ve been listening to that lullaby over and over and crying like a loon over the last hour. I’m not a mother yet but it reminded me of my mom’s powerful, unconditional love for me. “Bette was happier than she had ever been in her life and everything was good with the world.” => Loved this line. Contentment has been so elusive to Bette and to Tina as well. Is this a one-off story or are you planning to continue it? Because if this story will follow the trajectory of Season 3, then Bette’s contentment will sadly be short-lived. I also loved the way Bette pointed out Tina and Angie’s likenesses down to the smallest detail. That was sweet. Thank you for this lovely Mother’s Day tale, Spumoni. If you’re a mommy, Happy Mother’s Day to you and if not, Happy Sunday to the loving nurturer in you! Cheers! :>
That was absolutely wonderful…powerful…heartwarming. Thank you very much for sharing this with us.
I’m always happy to see your name beside a story. How I wouldn’t have loved to have seen this played out on the show! So heartfelt and loving, exactly as B&T should have been. What a lovely Mother’s Day treat.
Wow, that was full of emotions and fear of the unknown. Bette is still recovering from her childhood. My eyes turned lighter as I got older. They were chocolate brown but are now a shade dark than Laurel’s eyes.
Bette wouldn’t want to leave Angie… I can’t see a situation that would make that happen. And as Tina said, she wouldn’t let Bette do it. Poignant, sad, beautifully written. Thanks, Spumoni. (and Happy Mothers’ Day)
Thanks Spumoni. So lovely.
I really like your story, please keep it coming
That was beautiful. What a perfect tale for Mother’s Day. Touching dialogue between the Bette and Tina. And while reading it, I can actually feel how much Bette loves Angelica and Tina. Thanks for the wonderful story Spumoni :) If only we saw heartwarming things like these instead of the wreck that was season 3.
Thank you Spumoni. Really lovely and I really like your stories. So touching. Thank you and Happy Mother’s day! :)
Well done…loved B convincing T that Ang looks like Tina…rocking chair & song fear was a bit irrational but count on T to bring B around…thanks!
amazing … and wonderful. Happy Mother’s Day to you and L.
Beautifully written! I am a mother and superstitious ideas and long buried fears do come to the surface after your child arrives. It is irrational and difficult to manage even if you “intellectually” understand it is not right. Keep up the great story!
This was great. I hope there is more. Love is a never ending source. Thanks for this. Happy Mothers Day to all.
Touching and beautiful. Thank You!
Nice.
Whoa Spumoni, that was powerful! You are an incredibly talented writer. You have the ability to take a small thing and create a beautiful, heartfelt story around it. It really was nothing short of brilliant!
Too bad she did let go. This is beautiful, thanks a lot.
Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! Thanks for bringing us this enchanting story. It sure is a tribute to celebrate Mothers’ Day. The lullaby is incredibly beautiful and meaningful. Thanks for sharing it with us. Children are a true miracle of life and a joy to have. Yes, they do require lots of attention and care. But one smile from a child makes up for all of the sleepless nights and change of poopy diapers. We have gone through all those stages with our nephews and we have loved each and every minute of it. Cause in the end, the amount of love and appreciation that you get in return is more than worth the effort. Hope you had enjoyed Mothers’ Day and we thank you, from the bottom of our hearts for sharing this delightful story with us. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lu and Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick and Tias Adoradas to Patpez)
