Talk to Me of Mendocino ~ Chapter 3

    “After all that happened.”

Jodi straddled Bette’s lap. “Little things,” she smirked as she rubbed her nose against Bette’s.

Bette had laughed at the dramatic and convoluted events that Jodi categorized as “little things.”  Bette couldn’t help it.  Jodi never got caught up in the whats and whys.  She focused only on the results.

As she sat in the lodge’s comfortable armchair and remembered that conversation, Bette also schooled herself to see the sculpture as Jodi had.  It wouldn’t work.  Her efforts never had.  For Bette, the sculpture was everything that Jodi said, but it also symbolized the emotional tsunami that followed its creation.  She had coaxed Jodi to fall in love and change her life for her, yet had callously discarded her. Jodi’s revenge had been very public and very humiliating, but Bette had thought it insignificant when compared with having another chance with Tina.  When that had not worked, when Tina could not trust that Bette would be faithful and Bette grew impatient and then angry with Tina’s misgivings, when she felt could not trust that Tina would not abandon her, Bette had left before they could destroy each other again.  This time, Angelica was old enough to know and Bette felt she had betrayed an implicit promise to her daughter.

Raph was the second child that she had always wanted, the one she had hoped to have with Tina.  Considering her age at the time and the significant assistance of the leading fertility specialists, her son’s conception had been miraculous, a gift she had never imagined would ever be hers. Bette had selected the archangel’s name for her son because of Angelica.  Her artist friends assumed that he was named for the Renaissance painter.

A few months after Raph’s birth, during a week of teething-induced sleepless nights, a DVD had arrived in the mail with a note from the most important artist representative in the country that requested her input.  Exhausted, pacing the floor with her unhappy son, Bette had slid the DVD into her computer.  Stunned, she saw Jodi’s second video installation, a contrite counterpoint to her first.  It ended with an apology from Jodi and an explanation that she had traded with the Hammer Museum–one of her sculptures for the first video installation. It would never be shown again without its counterpoint.

    1. oh! Was a great update and I had to keep telling myself that Jodi had passed away and that this story was going to lead to Bette and Tina getting back together again! hmm… that’s what the story is going to lead up to right :) Thank you!

    2. Yeah, I can see how all that would be awkward for Bette. Tina seemed to be feeling a bit awkward in the last chapter, too. When they meet will it be awkwardness squared or will the awkward of one negate that of the other?

    3. what happened to page 1? LOL anyway, i feel really sad for some reason…maybe because there’s no TiBette…yet…btw, it was nice to meet you in NY…waiting for your wolves story ;)

    4. wow… the past seems really heartbreaking for both of them. but am holding up hope for the next 25 years. the range of your creativity is astounding!

    5. Hi dear sweet Spumoni! All those years have gone by, huh? 25 years, wow! We are sure that this event will bring many flashbacks from the past. A thorough analysis of what went wrong and what is left to mend. Hmmm Interesting, dear friend. As we mentioned earlier, we are totally hooked and you are doing an amazing job, at giving us all the details, prior to the encounter of B&T. Thanks for this wonderful update. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick and Tias Adoradas to Patpez) P.S. We love the intertwined updates with the wolfies. Yeah. You know we will always comment on that one, right? *wink*

    6. So Bette and Tina reunited briefly for the second time and then they parted ways again and then Bette went back to Jodi. Got it. And Bette and Tina are nearing the retirement age already, right? Okay. Jodi’s gone but she seems to cast a long shadow in this story. There lies my reluctance to embrace the plot. Anyway, please continue writing this story. I promise to lurk in the shadows and keep on reading. Thank you as always, Spumoni! :>
