Talk to Me of Mendocino ~ Chapter 3
Bette sat in a comfortable armchair as she looked through the room’s window. 25 years ago, the room she had shared with Jodi had overlooked the lake and Bette had made certain that her room this time was in a different wing and had the mountain view instead. She had lied when she told everyone that she was going to nap. What she really wanted was a reprieve from everyone’s expectations and assumptions about what she felt and how she would behave.
Jodi had only allowed a retrospective of her work when it was agreed that it would include a conference at this center, the location of the sculpture she cherished the most. Since it universally was considered to be her best work, the organizers were able to accede to the sculptor’s requirement.
Bette remembered the last of the many exchanges she and Jodi had had about the sculpture, almost three years earlier, when Jodi had been in remission for two years.
“I know how you feel. You have made yourself very clear.” Jodi signed calmly.
“That’s it? ‘I have made myself clear?’ Discussion ended? This is too important to be so easily dismissed!”
“It has not been dismissed. I considered what you said. It did not change my mind.” Jodi had shrugged, “It’s my retrospective, and I want the symposium up there.”
Bette had glared at Jodi and stormed off.
Hours later, Bette heard Jodi come into her office. She petulantly refused to turn around, which meant that she could not communicate with Jodi.
“Bette?” Jodi asked as she reached out and pulled at the desk chair so that Bette faced her. “You know it is my best piece.”
Bette pouted, “It is one of your better pieces.”
Jodi laughed, “Clever phraseology.”
“I don’t dispute the work’s importance.”
“Just it’s significance.”
“Because its significance is different for each of us.”
“Its significance is the same for each of us. Because of a silly sign pulled on a tractor, I learned that I could and wanted to love. If that had hadn’t happened, we never would have wound up here.”

oh! Was a great update and I had to keep telling myself that Jodi had passed away and that this story was going to lead to Bette and Tina getting back together again! hmm… that’s what the story is going to lead up to right :) Thank you!
That first page just flew by!
Yeah, I can see how all that would be awkward for Bette. Tina seemed to be feeling a bit awkward in the last chapter, too. When they meet will it be awkwardness squared or will the awkward of one negate that of the other?
what happened to page 1? LOL anyway, i feel really sad for some reason…maybe because there’s no TiBette…yet…btw, it was nice to meet you in NY…waiting for your wolves story ;)
wow… the past seems really heartbreaking for both of them. but am holding up hope for the next 25 years. the range of your creativity is astounding!
Nice update. Things are falling into place better, thanks.
Unlike some of IC’s stuff, I can believe this.
Things are starting to fall into place… slowly, but they are. I tried to do some math, Bette is around 60 now?
believable. and oddly enough, comfortable. thanks!
How cruel all of this was for ANGE. The child never asked to be born but she suffered for her mommies’ sake. Too cruel.
Hi dear sweet Spumoni! All those years have gone by, huh? 25 years, wow! We are sure that this event will bring many flashbacks from the past. A thorough analysis of what went wrong and what is left to mend. Hmmm Interesting, dear friend. As we mentioned earlier, we are totally hooked and you are doing an amazing job, at giving us all the details, prior to the encounter of B&T. Thanks for this wonderful update. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick and Tias Adoradas to Patpez) P.S. We love the intertwined updates with the wolfies. Yeah. You know we will always comment on that one, right? *wink*
So Bette and Tina reunited briefly for the second time and then they parted ways again and then Bette went back to Jodi. Got it. And Bette and Tina are nearing the retirement age already, right? Okay. Jodi’s gone but she seems to cast a long shadow in this story. There lies my reluctance to embrace the plot. Anyway, please continue writing this story. I promise to lurk in the shadows and keep on reading. Thank you as always, Spumoni! :>
