    Strictly Roommates – Chapter 14

“I have to go pack my things,” Tina said to Shane, wiping her tears with the back of her forearm.

“You’re moving out?” Shane asked incredulously.

“She all but told me to.  I can’t stay there with her.  Look, do you mind if I spend another night here until I can figure out where I’m going?”

“Of course,” Shane said.  “You can stay as long as you like.”

“Thanks.  Well, I’ll be back later then,” Tina said, rising from the bed.  She was still wearing the black dress she had worn the night before.  She hooked her fingers into the back of her heels and carried them, not bothering to put them back on.

Tina walked around back and let herself in through the patio doors.  The house was quiet, and she was hoping that Bette wasn’t home so that this wouldn’t be so hard.    Walking into the kitchen, she saw shards of glass everywhere.  Bette must have thrown the bottle of whiskey last night.  Tina sighed and put her heels down on one of the kitchen chairs.  She grabbed a broom and swept the glass up, throwing it into the trash.  She then scrubbed the remaining liquor off the floor.  This would be the last thing she’d ever do for this house.

She put the broom away and headed towards her bedroom.  It seemed like just the other day she had settled herself in and now she would be moving herself out.  As she reached the doorway to her bedroom, she saw Bette sprawled across her bed.  There were crumpled tissues all over the bed and a box of fresh ones tucked under her arm.  Beside the bed was a trash can, which Tina guessed was there in case Bette got sick.  Despite Tina’s anger at this woman, it broke her heart to see her like this.  Bette’s face was scrunched up as though she was having a bad dream.  Maybe that’s all this is, Tina thought.

Starting in the closet, Tina started pulling out all the hangers of clothes and laying them neatly on the floor.  She was piling all her shoes into one of the boxes she had brought in from the garage last night when Bette woke up.  The sound of the shoes dropping carelessly into the cardboard sent a jolt of pain through the back of her head.  She shot up out of bed when she saw Tina, who by now was talking the clothes out of her dresser.

“Tina…” Bette started, at a complete loss for words.  Where the hell could she possibly start?

“Now that you’re up, could you please leave so I can finish packing?” Tina asked, not turning around.

“Packing?  Tina, don’t do that.  We have to talk,” Bette pleaded.

“No, I think it’s all been said.  Please, Bette, just leave me alone.”

    “Tina I need to apologize–”

Tina whipped around, facing Bette for the first time.  The tears had begun flowing again and she could see that Bette was crying, too.

“Leave me, Bette,” she said, warningly.

“I won’t.”  Bette took another step closer to Tina.

“Don’t come near me,” Tina said, backing up into the dresser.

“Please, I’m sorry,” Bette choked out, reaching out for Tina’s arm.

“Don’t touch me!” Tina yelled, pushing Bette away from her.  Bette stumbled back a bit.  “God, don’t touch me.”  Tina grabbed a duffel bag of clothes off the floor.  “I’m staying at Shane’s for the night.  I’ll come back tomorrow while you’re at work to get the rest of my stuff.”

Bette sank down onto the bed and dropped her face onto her palms.  As Tina walked down the hallway and out of the house, she could hear Bette’s sobs as though they were following her.

It was all she could do not to crumble at the sound.

    1. All right you two…somebody’s gonna have to “put it out there”. Just say it will make you feel better! I love this story..as much as it frustrates me sometime. PPS!

    2. I hope Bette finds her lost words right quick. Tears won’t help – but explaining will. What is Tina supposed to think? Bette good as kicked her out of the house. Please help them, atlas. :-) Thanks for the new chapter!

    3. Dam why is that these two have such difficulty speaking to each other….Come on…NOW Bette stop her…another chapter Please……quick before Tina leaves….

    4. Oh, that didn’t go so well, did it? Bette’s wretched in her sorrow, but she’s got to start grovelling, and start speaking from her heart. At least Tina let her know that she’s going to be next door. She could have left without a word. It’s going to be hard, but maybe Bette can start making it up to Tina. Thanks for posting atlas, more when you can please. Cheers
