Bette raised one eyebrow at Meghan who had the good grace to laugh

“THAT was a one off “

“I have had various reactions to my skills – but no one has EVER fallen asleep before hand”

“I said I was sorry “

“You hadn’t slept for 48 hours and as you told me that’s the point when  you start losing your mind a little “ Bette was still smiling  – she liked Meghan but not today – not today of all days.

“Not my finest moments “

“It wasn’t a problem “ Bette reassured

“Are you sure you cannot drop whatever you have planned and hang out with me today – we could

have some fun”

Bette shook her head – Meghan was so cute and they had a lot of fun together. Even though Meghan was 5 years older than Bette they still had a lot in common and the time they had spent together had been fun. But Bette couldn’t take her up on the offer – today was the day she would see her high school sweetheart Tina for the first time in four years.

“Its complicated “ Bette said after a few minutes silence

“You are 23 years old Bette – you have your whole life ahead of you – nothing should be complicated for you “

“Its very complicated “ Bette admitted

“You need a friend ?” Meghan asked

Bette was usually self reliant but the prospect of today had been on her mind for so many weeks. And she hadn’t talked about it to anyone

“How about I buy you breakfast “ Bette suggested

Meghan nodded “I think that’s a great idea –  Gary’s Diner in 30 minutes ?”

“Can you stay awake that long ?”

“If you are paying for bacon and scrambled eggs  – I am staying awake”

Bette nodded “ 30 minutes it is then – thanks “

“Hey – I get to give you advice you won’t heed and you get to buy me food “

Bette headed up the stairs to her apartment. She could have got the elevator with Meghan but there was a history around that lift and the two of them – better not risk history repeating itself.
