Shane and Molly: A Love Story – Chapter 20

As the song finishes, Shane lifts her head from Molly’s shoulder, cradles Molly’s face in her hands, and presses her lips to hers, ever so gently and tenderly. Their friends and family clap, as they dry their eyes, having been moved as well by the message in the song. Hand in hand, Molly and Shane walk off the dance floor towards their friends, as the DJ begins to play some upbeat dance music.

“That was beautiful, you guys. What a beautiful song,” Jenny says, as she embraces them both.

    “Thanks, Jenny,” Molly says.

“Are you guys having fun?” Shane asks.

“Oh yeah,” Tina says, as she sucks down the last mouthful from her glass of champagne. “This is the best wedding reception I’ve ever been too.”

“Thanks,” Shane says, looking around. “Where’re Shay and Alice?” she asks, noticing their absence.

Smiling, Bette points at the DJ stand and says, “Over there,” just as a server comes over to them with a tray full of champagne.

“What the-?” Shane asks, as she sees Alice and Shay get up on the platform.

Bette hands everyone a glass of champagne, as the music comes to a stop. Over the speaker system, Alice begins to speak.

“Um, is this thing on?!” Alice says, laughing, as she taps on the microphone. The guests all chuckle as Alice continues. “This little man right here is Shay, Shane’s brother,” Alice says, as she places her hand on Shay’s shoulder. “He’s the Best Man and he has prepared a little speech.”

Shane smiles warmly as she watches Shay take the microphone from Alice and dig through his pockets for a crumpled piece of paper. As Shay tries to open it and flatten it out, Shane wraps her arm around Molly’s waist and pulls her to her side.

After smoothing the wrinkles from the paper, Shay begins. “Hi, I’m Shay,” he says tentatively. “I’ve never been to a wedding before, but when I googled “Best Man,” it said that it was the best man’s job to give a speech, so that’s what I’m going to do.” Shane’s grin grows wider as she beams with pride at Shay. They had both come a long way since the day his mother had left him on her doorstep. She had been so afraid of him, of how to be a parent, of how to care for someone else. But now, she couldn’t imagine her life without him in it.
