Shane and Molly: A Love Story – Chapter 14

Shane gives Joyce a crooked smile and asks, “What gave me away?” She walks over to the window and peers out at the grounds and the crowd that is quickly gathering.

“I’ve seen the way you look at Molly and I see the way she looks at you. I can see how much you love each other. It’s obvious to anyone that is near you.”

Shane drops her head and sweetly asks, “Yeah?”

“Yeah. So what’s keeping you from doing it when you clearly want to?”

Shane lets the drapes fall back across from the window and she turns back around to face Joyce. “I guess I’m just scared.”

“Scared of what? That she’ll say ‘No’?”

“No. I’m pretty sure she’d say ‘Yes.’ I’m just scared that I’d fuck it up somehow,” she replies as she sits down on the corner of Molly’s bed.

“Shane,” Joyce says, as she sits next to her, and places a hand on her shoulder. “We’re all afraid of that. But if you trust in your love for each other, you won’t fuck it up.”

Shane nods her head, takes a deep breath and stands up. “Well, I think it’s just about time to get you married.”

Shane and Joyce stand in the center of the garden where the ceremony is to take place. Seated in front of them are all of Joyce’s and Phyllis’s friends and family, who are all eagerly awaiting the strains of the sting quartet to announce the arrival of the bride. As she looks at the floor, Shane nervously taps her foot, as she thinks back to what Joyce was saying earlier, her words, “Trust in your love for each other,” echoing over and over again in her head. Suddenly, the string quartet begins to play. Shane’s head snaps up just in time to see Molly round the corner and begin to walk down the aisle. Shane smiles as her eyes meet Molly’s. For a moment, Shane feels like they are the only ones there. She touches the ring box in her pocket and allows herself to imagine that Molly is walking towards her, about to promise her life to her. As Molly gets closer to them, Shane’s mouths “I love you” to Molly and Molly returns her sentiment with an “I love you, too.” Molly makes her way over to her place on the other side, as Phyllis comes to stand at the end of the aisle. The music changes and everyone turns to watch Phyllis as she walks down the aisle. Everyone that is, except Shane. Shane’s eyes are still fixed on Molly. “Trust in your love,” keeps playing over and over in her head.
