“Okay, I guess I’m in.  Let’s get this over with.”

After several minutes the gentle woman quietly announced.

“I truly cannot believe what I am reading.  I have never witnessed anything like this…never…It is the same.”

Bette looked at the woman and saw the sincerity…and maybe a touch of fear.

“So what does this all mean?”

    Alice jumped into the conversation.

“Wait Bette, let’s let Shane go before we ask any questions.”

Everyone looked over at Shane.  She shrugged her shoulders, stood and walked toward the table.  She looked seriously at the exotic older woman holding the cards and gave her a shy smile.

    “I’m game, if you’re game.”

The woman returned Shane’s smile and handed her the cards.  After a moment she spoke.

“It is different…Love is present…elusive. There is also unfinished…um…business.  The woman turned over the remaining cards and then paused.  Finally, after studying the cards, she spoke.

“Your fortune is much the same as your friends.  There are two paths but the crossroad is different.  The woman looked at Shane.

“Have you lost your true love?”

    “Um…uh…maybe…why?”

“Well, your path to happiness leads behind you…into the past.  The others, their paths all have two paths, one is dark and one is light, but they all lead to the future.  Your path to happiness runs through your past.”

    “Oh…um…anything more?”

    “No, I am sorry…nothing more.”

Helena walked toward the woman and handed her some money and spoke seriously.

“Is there anything more you can tell us?   We had this crazy thing happen…um, Alice here, well she thought she saw a friend of ours, actually a deceased friend of ours…on the lake this morning… and well…”

The woman looked at Helena and gave her a beautiful smile.

“Well then that explains things.  You have all reached your crossroads together.  You must resolve the past before you can move on.  It is all as it should be.”

The ladies walked out of the small room and toward the door in silence.  Once they were outside Tina spoke.

“Okay guys, let’s all stay calm and we’ll work this out.  What do you say we go back to the house, have a drink and talk things over…Okay?”

Everyone agreed and piled into the SUV.

Everyone sat quietly lost in their own thoughts.  Bette sat in stunned silence concentrating on the road while trying to sort out the events of the day and the unbelievable information she’d received from Kit.  Questions and scenarios were running through her mind at an alarming rate.  As her mind raced she thought, ‘There has to be some plausible explanation, could this all be some elaborate joke?  Some sort of prank, or…maybe it’s someone’s…attempt at getting at the …No, it couldn’t be, but what if someone else knows…oh shit…’

Tina sat in the passenger seat and quietly watched Bette as she drove.  The old tension was evident, the stress palpable.  Tina could see Bette visibly struggling with demons long since laid to rest. Tina’s mind wandered, ‘Haven’t we already moved on?  What possible crossroad could lie in our paths?’  Bette turned to Tina as if she had heard her thoughts, and with pleading eyes and a look of fear which chilled Tina’s heart Bette tried to smile, but instead a single tear rolled down her cheek.

    1. Well I’m glad to be first! I have to say, I laughed so hard when you said you punted the cliffie I left off with. This is amazing, and it does open up some avenues to be explored for sure. Did Bette do something? Hmmm….I don’t even want to place that bet! Thanks for the chapter, I hope you had as much fun doing it as people, including myself, will enjoy reading it!

    2. Great job Dazed!! Another fine example of the creativity that comes with ‘tag team’ writing– besides the obvious fun you are all having with setting each other up with various outrageous scenarios- I’m also really enjoying how the different writing styles work together and flow. Batter up Skimmer!

    3. Great chapter. What is Bette afraid of? Does she know something about Jenny’s death that no one else knows? Did she confide what she knows with Tina? So many unanswered questions. Can’t wait to see what Skimmer comes up with.

    4. Hey D&A, Many thanks for this great addition to a wonderful piece of shared writing. This story just shows how talented your all are as it flows seemlessly from one author to the next. The drama is really starting to unfold with so much potential.I can’t hardly wait.Your Loyal Fan.
