Shadows In The Dark – A Writers Challenge

Alice just stared at the woman before her as she solemnly looked at the cards on the table in front of her.  The woman looked up into Alice’s eyes and spoke very seriously.

“I cannot read your future my dear.  You see the cards…there are two paths before you…You are at a crossroad in your life…and you see here, this card tells me that you cannot move forward unless you resolve the issues of the past.”

Alice looked at the woman for a moment in stunned silence.

“You have got to be shittin’ me…”

Seeing that Alice was ready to lose it, Helena jumped from her seat and entered the conversation.

“Alice dear, calm down…um, maybe we can try again, or better yet let me have a try.  I love to get readings and that way we can get a better…um, gauge of things…you know?”

Helena placed her arm around Alice’s shoulder and gently moved her away from the table.  She then returned to the table and sat down.  She feigned a smile at the mysterious woman and motioned for her to begin.

Lana stood up and touched Helena’s arm and quietly asked.

“Are you sure you want to do this?  She could say anything.”

    Helena smiled at Lana’s concern.

“No worries love.  I’ve done this many times.”

Helena turned her attention back to the mysterious woman and continued.

“So what do you say we give this a try?”

The woman gave Helena a warm smile and handed the cards to her to examine and shuffle.  Helena looked at the cards and then began shuffling   After a few moments, Helena handed the deck of cards back to the woman and watched her closely as she began placing the cards on the table.  Helena looked over at Alice and saw the mixture of fury, fear and complete confusion written on her face and in her every movement.  She turned back to the gentle woman before her and caught a look of concern on her face.  She quickly felt herself tense up, but she composed herself and calmly spoke.

“So, tell me, what do you see?”

The woman looked seriously at the cards but gave no response.  Helena waited a moment and then with some trepidation she spoke.

    1. Well I’m glad to be first! I have to say, I laughed so hard when you said you punted the cliffie I left off with. This is amazing, and it does open up some avenues to be explored for sure. Did Bette do something? Hmmm….I don’t even want to place that bet! Thanks for the chapter, I hope you had as much fun doing it as people, including myself, will enjoy reading it!

    2. Great job Dazed!! Another fine example of the creativity that comes with ‘tag team’ writing– besides the obvious fun you are all having with setting each other up with various outrageous scenarios- I’m also really enjoying how the different writing styles work together and flow. Batter up Skimmer!

    3. Great chapter. What is Bette afraid of? Does she know something about Jenny’s death that no one else knows? Did she confide what she knows with Tina? So many unanswered questions. Can’t wait to see what Skimmer comes up with.

    4. Hey D&A, Many thanks for this great addition to a wonderful piece of shared writing. This story just shows how talented your all are as it flows seemlessly from one author to the next. The drama is really starting to unfold with so much potential.I can’t hardly wait.Your Loyal Fan.
