    Rescue Me, Chapter 28

     

     

     

    “T are you OK,” asks Bette.

     

    “I I’m fine.  I was just shaken a little,” answers Tina.  Bette helps Tina back to an upright position and keeps her hands on her waist for support.  Tina moves closer to Eric and starts to assess his injuries.

     

    “Bette what happened to him,” She asks.  Tina continues evaluating as Bette speaks.

     

    “He was in a car crash Tina.  He was hit broad side, on the passenger side, by a minivan, rolled onto the driver’s side and slide up against a light standard.  He was trapped for about twenty minutes before we could get him out.  Chris and I gained access through the windshield so we could start treating him.  He’s been profoundly unconscious from the start.    I had to move his head into a neutral position to open his airway.  I had to suction him too; he had a lot of blood and secretions in his oropharynx.  T, he has subcutaneous emphysema when I got to him so I’m thinking he has some underlying structural injury to his airway.”

     

    Laura asks, “Tina, are you going to be able to handle this case?”

     

    “Laura, there is no one else available and from the looks of things, he can’t wait.  Laura would you get the cardio-thoracic surgeon on call and have him meet me in the O.R.” says Tina. 

     

    Tina looks at Bette, both seem shaken.  “You did great Bette, as usual, thank you.” 

     

    Bette just smiles and asks, “Are you going to be OK?”

     

    “I’m sure I’ll be fine.  I just wish you could be there with me,” says Tina.

     

    Laura looks at Bette and says, “I may be able to arrange that, if you like.”

     

    “I don’t know Laura, is that really possible,” Bette says cautiously.

     

    “Yes, I think the surgeons will need you there to answer some important questions during the surgery.  Let’s get you upstairs and scrubbed up,” says Laura.

     

    Bette looks at Tina and manages a brief smile.  “Wait, what about Chris?”

     

    “I’ll call dispatch and tell them I need to debrief both of you on this call.  Then I’ll send him to Tina’s office to occupy Alice.  OK let’s get moving; as soon as they’re done with his CT scan they’ll be ready in the O.R.,” Laura says to Bette.
