    Phoenix Rising (14)

    Chapter 14

Tina lay in bed holding her phone.  ‘Keep moving forward…Keep moving forward…’  Tina picked up the phone, took a deep breath and dialed Bette’s number.  The phone barely rang and she heard.

    “T…Hi…”

“Hi, how was the rest of your day?”

“Pretty much filled with thoughts of you.”

Tina let a smile cross her face.

    “I hope good thoughts.”

“Absolutely.  What about you?  How was your day?  You sound tired.”

“I am.  Thinking about a certain brunette can be very tiring.”

The ladies shared a playful giggle.

“Tina, are you really alright…maybe I should come over and make sure Alice is taking good care of you.”

    “Easy there tiger…slow down…”

    “Well, I just thought…”

    “I know what you thought…”

The ladies laughed again.  After a moment Bette quietly asked.

    “T…What are you doing tomorrow?’

“Well Dana comes home tomorrow and Alice has dinner planned.  I’m going to meet Carmen, and Kit might drop by too.  I’m sorry… I asked Alice not to invite you…I thought the first time we saw each other that maybe it should… just be us…you know?”

“I understand T…but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to see you.  How about Sunday?”

There was a moment of silence and then Tina whispered.

    “Okay…um, what should we do?”

    Bette was stunned…

    “Really?”

    “Really.”

“Okay…well do you want me to come there?  Or would you like to go somewhere?”

“Um, I think I’d like to get out for a bit…but no place where I’d know anyone…Okay?”

“How about I pick you up around, say 11:00… and… maybe we could take a drive up the coast a bit…and um, we could get brunch, or lunch…or whatever… along the way.”

“That sounds nice….Bette, you have to understand…um, I really don’t look so good.  I want you to prepare yourself…can you do that for me?”

“Tina…please…I don’t care how you look…all I care about is that you’re…okay, ya know?”

“That’s really sweet, but promise you’ll prepare yourself…”

“Tina, I promise…Tell me what to expect.”

“Well let’s see…take any picture you have of me in your mind and shed a few pounds…well more than a few…and add a cast to the right wrist, got that?”

    “Yeah.”

“Now change the hair and make it a bit shaggier and add a pretty good limp to my walk.  Okay?”

    “Okay.”

“Now add a little bruising around the left side of the head and a few other places…Okay?”

    Bette responded very quietly.

“Now look at my face and look at my left eye…it’s still pretty bad Bette.  There are stitches and its…”

Tina finished as she began to cry.

    “I’m sorry Bette…are you okay…”

There was silence and then Bette spoke.

“Tina I’m fine, I’m just waiting for you to get to the good parts of my image of you.”

    Tina laughed.

“Cute Porter, very cute.  So you’re going to be okay?”

“Tina, you’re the one who was hurt…I just can’t wait to see you…’you’…You know what I mean.”

“That’s sweet.  Hey, would you do me a favor?”

    “Anything.”

“Would you bring one of your paintings with you?”

“You don’t fool around do you?”

“No…I think I kind of lost the cautious tentative side of myself.”

    “It suits you…and I’ll bring a painting.”

“Thanks, I think I better get some sleep.”

    “Will you call me tomorrow?”

    Tina thought for a moment.

“I think we are at a really good place right now…it might be a better idea not to tempt fate and just take a day off…until you pick me up here at 11:00 on Sunday.  It’s only one day.  What do you say?”

“As much as I hate to say this…You’re probably right…so…Sunday at 11:00?”

    “Sunday at 11:00…Good Night Bette.”

    “Good Night Tina…I love you.”

    “Me too”

    3. I am dieing here…this is going to be so hard for both of them no preparation will suit what they are about to experience. I for one if I were Bette wupon seeing tina there would be not way I could not break down…not for just she is about to see but for all that they have been through since they last saw each other…I hope I get to see anothe post today….Pwease…..So good

    4. They are so sweet with each other. Even with all the description Tina gave Bette I think it will be difficult for her the first time she sees her.

    5. Ah yes, moving forward one of my favorite parts of any story. I was getting depressed with Tina’s description of herself cmao. Both their attitudes kick ass, thanks for the awesome post DnA. I’m so glad you have no immunity from “the urge”

    6. Yes, positive moves in the right direction. Happy that Tina called and initiated conversation and the meeting that is so desperately needed between them. It’s good Bette didn’t let Tinas descriptions scare her off, however, the reality is not as bad as Tina described. And even if it is I know tha Bette will be in tears when she sees her for the first time. Will we have to wait until Sunday for the next post. I hope not. Thanks for posting and sharing this warm and loving story. PPVS

    7. Just getting ready to power down for the night – and lo and behold – one of my fave stories appears! Can’t wait for them to see each other…the wait is gonna kill Bette! So sweet. PPS!

    8. I’m heartbroken by your description of Tina and I refuse to believe she looks like that, gosh, Bette’s heart is going to break when she sees Tina. I’m glad they’re moving forward in the right direction, can’t wait for their Sunday date!! Do we actually have to wait for Sunday itself? >.< Thanks for this and PPVS! =))
