    THIS STORY IS INFLUENCED BY SEASON 2 SPOILERS. Helena uses her influence to gain access to Tina in the emergency room. Tina makes a choice.

    Previously:

    Tina is asking for someone to come in right now. Which one of you is her partner? asked the doctor.

    That would be me, said Helena, brushing past Bette dismissively.

    Come with me Bette, Tina has been asking for you for the last hour, Dr. Gomba said taking Helenas arm.

    Bette, who had started to turn towards Alice, twisted back quickly.

    What? exclaimed Bette and Helena at the same time, but with very different inflections.

    Yes, Tina is asking for Bette, said the doctor, looking down at her clipboard for confirmation, umBette Porter.

    That, said Bette with a steely look directly into Helenas dark eyes, would be me.

    Im having Tina admitted to the maternity floor, Dr. Gomba explained to Bette as they passed through the locked security doors towards the emergency bays, leaving the other women behind.

    I thought you said the baby was okay, said Bette with an alarmed look on her face.

    As far as we know the baby is fine. However, I would feel more comfortable if Tina is followed by a perinatologist, just to be on the safe side. Her body has been through a crisis, and the effects on the developing baby might not be immediately evident. If youll excuse me, said the doctor, Ill need to check on the arrangements. Tina is in the room right there, she said while gesturing towards a small room to the left of the nurses station.

    Bette stood outside of the curtained-off room for a moment, at once eager and apprehensive to pull back the thin cotton separating the two women. The last thing she heard from Tina was a whispered call to her lover. Perhaps this was an error, perhaps she did expect Helena to open the curtain. Bette looked around the room for re-enforcement. Finding nothing but the hum of people busy in their lives, in their work, she took a deep breath and entered the room.

    Tina was sleeping–remarkable considering the beeping heart monitor; the blood pressure cuff hissing every few minutes as it automatically checked her vital signs; the noise from the various crisis situations, real and imagined, being attended to in every other little curtained-off area. Bette quietly moved the lone stool over to the head of the bed and stared at the woman she loved. She put her hand through the bars of the hospital bed railing and found Tinas hand. She held it. Just held it. A connection she did not want to end.
