My One Special One – Chapter 31

    “Why did you stay, Mom?”

“Your father would have fought me tooth and nail for custody of you and later your brother and sister.  It would have been long, drawn out and nasty.  I couldn’t risk losing you, Tina, and I certainly didn’t want to have you only fifty per cent of the time.”

“Is that why you always told me to follow my dreams, no matter the cost?”

“Yes, honey, and I guess I taught you well because you stood up to me when it came to your feelings for Bette.  Go ahead, Tina, ask me the question.  I know you want the answer.”

“What question, Mom?” Tina never could hide anything from her mother.  Mother knew her daughter, that’s for sure.

“Tina…ask me and I’ll answer you.”

“All right, all right.  Will you stand up for your dreams now, Mom?  Will you hold on to the person you love no matter the cost?  Even if your children…”

Sam was sitting next to Ann, her hand placed protectively and supportably over hers.   Ann turned slightly to look at Sam.  She wanted to answer this question as much for Sam as for Tina.

“Yes, Tina, I will let no one or no thing stand in the way of my heart’s dream this time.  I can only hope and pray my children understand.  It would break this mother’s heart if they didn’t, but I’ve already paid the enormous emotional cost of leaving love behind.  I love Samantha – I have loved Samantha – I will love Samantha for the rest of my days.”

…the broadest of smiles graced Sam’s face.  I waited thirty years to hear those words, she thought.

“Well, then, mother, that settles it.   We’ll face the world and any obstacles thrown our way together.   Somewhere deep inside me I knew there was a reason for your initial reaction.  I’m still a bit taken back by this turn of events, but I want you to be happy.   May I speak to Samantha?”

Ann wasn’t expecting that question, but handed the phone to Sam.

    “What?” Sam asked.

Ann shrugged her shoulders.  “She asked to speak to you.”

    “Hi,Tina.” Sam said quietly.
