“We won’t. Mom?”
“Yes, honey.”
“I’m glad you called.”
“So am I, Christina…so am I. I love you. We’ll talk again soon. Please tell Bette I’m really not a crazy, bigoted old woman.”
“I will, Mom. I love you, too. Bye.”
Bette heard the “Bye” and came back into the bedroom. She sat next to Tina on the bed and put her arm around her, pulling her close.
“So? Everything okay?” Bette asked.
“Yes, everything is fine. I feel so much better that we cleared the air, but…”
“What, Baby? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong, Babe. She mentioned that her one wish is that I not experience the pain of regret and missed chances.”
“Well, that’s a good wish, right?” Bette gave a reassuring hug.
“Oh, yeah, but I just have the sense my mother never wanted me to feel the pain she experienced…I mean I knew she was unhappy with my father…but…
“Look, the important thing is she called you and you’ve mended your relationship. I know too well what it’s like not to have a mother around. Your mom just needed a little breathing and thinking time. All she wants is for you to be happy.”
“Right. Okay, now we’re going to have some coffee, please!”
“Oh, yeah, I sidetracked you earlier from doing that, didn’t I?”

Sometime later the same morning in a law office somewhere in North Carolina…
Chris was the best secretary in the world. Over twenty-five years of service – right out of high school. She was loyal, diligent, reliable and trustworthy, but I think her hearing is going. She must have heard wrong…after all these years…it couldn’t be…
“HELLO! Did you hear me, boss?” came Chris’s voice. Daydreaming was not an attribute her boss wore well or often.
“I’m sorry, Chris. Who did you say was on the phone?”
“Ann Kennard on line two.”
“Would you tell her I’ll be with her in just a few moments?”
“Sure.” Chris relayed the message and put the call on hold.
Seldom did this able, well-respected attorney break into a nervous sweat but if anyone peaked into the office now, beads of sweat on forehead and upper lip would clearly be seen from across the room.

Yes, Yes, Yes, when I read this at work this morning, I could not post a comment. Yes, her mother had fallen for a woman too in her younger years, and her name is Chris, (so is that where Tina gets her name) and that is why she freaked out when Tina told her about Bette. So happy they’ve made up.No please post soon and bring on the rest of the story. And please do not let anything happen to Tina. Catch the bad guys before they hurt our precious girl. Awesome chapter…I agree with Honda…I think it’s a woman…either it’s a woman or the person she was talking to is like Tina’s real father or something like that….but I am leaning towards it being a woman. Show no shame Ann…do the damn thing.
Uh-huh, guys! Chris is the secretary!… But I think, no I hope that indeed, that mysterious old friend is a woman… Would make things quite interesting. Could also be a man, but i don’t think he would be Tina’s real father as you said that she ended the affair cause her husband got her pregnant… Oooooh, so exciting! This story (like all your stories) is just brillant, I love the way you mix some scary intrigue with the personal storyline… makes it like a big great novel!!! You’re such a talented writer. I wonder who Anne Kennard is in love with and let go all those years ago. Tina is so in love with Bette and working hard towards sharing their life together. Great chapter.

Hey Arcextl, Am loving this tale. It was wonderful to see Tina’s mom backtrack and admit the error of her ways and apologize to her daughter. Sweet love and a warm wack up call was perfect as Bette and Tina make an awesome couple and fall deeper and deeper in love and contentment with one another.
