maybe i miss your body (chapter 8)
A little while after we’d arrived, the doctor had come out and asked for a blood donor for Carmen. He wouldn’t let Shane give blood though; he said it was because of the ‘high aids risk among gays.’ Asshole. Shane had freaked out and attacked him, and now the security guards were standing in the corner of the room, watching her. Kit had given blood, and the doctor said Carmen was stabilized now.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up to see Bette, a worried expression displayed on her face.
“Anything about Mark, yet?” I asked her. She nodded, kneeling down in front of me. “What?” I asked slowly.
“The doctor said he’d suffered traumatic head injuries, probably from a baseball bat or something heavy like that.” She paused, looking down. “He’s in a coma.”
“What?!” I whispered, not wanting to believe it. “Can we- can we see him?” She nodded, standing back up.
“Everyone else is in there now. I didn’t want to wake you.” I stood up, and followed her to one of the bluish-white doors marked with crooked hanging numbers 26. She slowly opened the door and we squeezed into the crowded room. I made my way to the far side of the bed, almost looking away when I saw Mark. His face was completely pale, his eyes closed, and there were all sorts of wires running across his face and arms. An IV pole stood close to the bed, and a monitor with green zigzag lines beeped every few seconds in unison with his slow, steady breaths. The side of his head was covered with a white patch, fresh blood stains visible on it, accompanying numerous cuts and bruises across his cheeks and forehead.
“Why would someone do this?” I asked quietly, still staring at him, lying peacefully in the small bed. “There’s so much anger and hate in everyone these days, and they think we’re to blame for everything. They’re always trying to punish us for things we haven’t done, and I’m so sick of it.” Shane stepped forward, looking everyone in the eye as she spoke:
“I think it’s time we started fighting back.”
The End
Well, I didn’t think it was really going anywhere, so I figured I’d better just finish it, lol.
