March Madness II ~ Being Green~ A Backstory Holiday Tale
Angelica watched in shock as her mother pooped the French fry in her mouth. When Bette reached again to the plate, Angelica could not hide her consternation. “Mama, you’re touching my plate!”
Bette had forgotten her daughter’s idiosyncrasy and was immediately apologetic. “I’m sorry, sweetie. I forgot.”
Kit grabbed a clean plate and placed it on the counter. Angelica began to push French fries on to the plate for her mother.
“Sweetie, no. They’re your fries. I just wanted one.”
“I can share.”
“I know and thank you, but keep them for yourself.”
“I’ll get you your own fries, Bette, and some for Tina too.”
“See. Aunt Kit is getting some for me and Mama T. Finish yours.” Bette turned to Kit, “Thanks, Kit.”
“I’ll pack cheeseburgers, too, Baby Sis.”
~~
When Bette and Angelica left a little while later, Kit hugged Bette extra hard and long, “I love you, Bette. I always have.”
Bette still had no idea what was triggering Kit’s extreme emotions, so she just hugged her sister. “I know.” She rubbed Kit’s back soothingly, “I’ve always known and I’ve always loved you, too.”
~~
As Bette drove home, Bette wondered whether to mention Kit’s odd mood to Tina.
“What is a blast?” Angelica asked from her car seat.
“What did you say, Angie?”
“What is a blast?”
“Do you want to know what the word means?” By looking in the rearview mirror, Bette could see her daughter nodding her head. “’Blast’? Well, it depends. It can mean a few things. It can mean an explosion like a firecracker or it can…”
“I drew a shamrock.”
“What?’ Bette asked, no longer surprised at her daughter’s short attention span.
“I drew a shamrock.”
“May I see it later?”
Angelica opened her sketch pad and held up her drawing for her mother to see.
“When we get to a red light, I can see it better, OK?”
Angelica nodded but while she waited she asked, “Why do Irish people like shamrocks?”
Bette knew that it involved Saint Patrick and had religious symbolism, but she couldn’t remember what was real and what was myth. Besides, she wasn’t comfortable discussing anything religious without Tina’s input.

Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! This was certainly a great treat on your behalf, before hitting the road, and go on vacation. Thanks for sharing with us the TRUE story of St. Patrick’s. We enjoyed it a LOT. We are in love with the wolfies, especially Angie’s cousins. They are SO cute! You left us with this HUGE grin on our faces. Thank you, again for this beautiful update. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick)
Another great chapter! I loved the part where Angie was telling the pups that St. Partick’s Day was about fireworks and people hitting each other. Made me laugh!
another great update…Kit’s flashback almost made me cry, and Angie is so cute…i love this story and i’m glad you’re back
That was hilarious. Kids do have short attention spans (as well as some adults, ME for one). Kit’s flash back allowed the readers to see into Bette and Kit’s past and what made them who they are today.
Bette and Trouble’s relationship makes my heart melt.
Loved it! Vicious leprechauns and all. Also enjoyed Kit’s flashback. Thanks again!
i know i ought to read before i comment but i felt the need to mention the word “earworm” just because. THANKS for posting, btw. Don’t think anyone can ever get enough of your writing and humor, no matter what you say.
I laughed as soon as I saw your post. Here are so many wonderful stories on this side, some romantic, some tragic, some deeply sad, but this one is sooo …different. Even when the circumstances like in a fairytale the behaviour of Bette and Tina are believable. I hope to see more from you. :) Ps. I like the little pup Trouble. He is sweet.
Well, honestly, I don’t think it’s been established that Angie is Irish (although Jennifer Beals is), but her cousins are. But so what? Come March 17 everybody is. I’ll just note that pre-Patrick dogs and wolves appear to have been important clan totems in the Celtic system. So are they going to serve green beer to the wolves for St. Patrick’s? Dogs love beer, I’m sure wolves would, too. And they could all celebrate their heritage.
Wackadoodle?
i just read this “There were customers who did not realize that they made excuses to go to The Planet just so they could catch an installment of the Tina and Bette melodrama” and i had to comment really quick so i can continue reading…this phrase reminded me of me, my excuse to watch TLW that was unbearable sometimes, was to catch an installment of Tibette melodrama… :) brb
Great update… love the humour and loved Kit’s flashback. Great story you write so well and I can actually see Tina and Bette behaving just like that with their wolf relatives :)
I liked the story of St Patrick’s (I never knew it), and I liked the bit of backstory with Kit and Bette even more. I think Red is the least grateful houseguest ever. It’s maybe time for him to jog on. “Cranky” Hunter will have one less mouth to feed, at any rate. In-laws, eh? Tina’s father’s reaction to the story really is funny. Thanks for the post, Spumoni.
Love this story, Love Lit’Bit and so love Troubles. He loves Bette so much. I can see him in a chair with his head on Bettes lap. Maybe if the leave T&B house they can leave Him and tell everyone he is an Irishwolf Hound.
