March Madness II ~ Being Green~ A Backstory Holiday Tale

Tina immediately lost, and Bette had never had, any interest in the catalogs.  Each looked at the other in confusion when they heard Angelica’s description of the party at The Planet.  Each then remembered Angelica’s question.

    “I think I know…”

    “Me too,” Tina replied.

    “Later?”

Tina nodded her agreement to Bette’s suggestion that they defer the explanations.

Angelica continued, “Mama B and Mama T don’t let me have fireworks and I don’t like it when people get hit.  But see,” she pointed to the refrigerator, where her drawing was now on display.  “That’s pictures for the party.  There was a man who walked all over and held a leaf like that when he talked to people about God.  His name was Patrick and he made all of the snakes go away.”

“What’s a snake?”  Little Bit asked.

“It looks like a jump rope and it wiggles,” Angelica replied.  “Mama T?  What  did the snakes do bad that Patrick had to chase …?

“Did you just say that Saint Patrick got rid of the snakes!” the patriarch yelped, startling everyone and frightening the three cousins.

    “Daddy!” Tina yelled.

The patriarch, shocked at his own reaction, immediately apologized.  “I’m sorry.  I shouldn’t have yelled like that.  It’s just that hearing that old story about how that man chased the snakes away, it always makes me angry.”

“Angie, remember I told you that very old stories can sometimes get mixed up?”  Tina reminded the child.

    Angelica nodded.

The patriarch, though, continued.  “It’s not a myth.  It’s a lie.  He didn’t chase the snakes away.  He was afraid of the snakes.  Every time he would see a snake, he’d jump up on a big rock and squeal.  The wolves would then get rid of the snake because they couldn’t stand the noise he made.  Well, he traveled all over the place and the same thing kept happening, so the wolves got together and decided that they wouldn’t have any peace and quiet until they got rid of all of the snakes.”

“Daddy, exactly how did they get rid of them,” Red asked with pseudo-innocence.

The patriarch glared at his difficult son, “Don’t ask.”

“Daddy, where have you heard about that?”  Tina asked.

“My great grandfather told me and his great grandfather told him.  He told me lots of stories.  Don’t get me started about the leprechauns.”

    “Leprechauns,” Tina said skeptically.

“ It rained all of the time on that island.  There were rainbows after rainbows after rainbows.  Every day another one and at the bottom of each one,  both ends mind you,   there was a leprechaun sitting on a pot of gold..  Soon you couldn’t go anywhere without running into a leprechaun.  Let me tell you, those leprechauns are very nasty when you get near their pots of gold. You wouldn’t think so, considering how small they are, but they are vicious.  Anyway, that’s why our forebears left Ireland.”

    “Left?” Tina commented.

“One of them was just like you, Pinky.  He told the ship captain that his cousins were Irish wolfhounds, which in a way was true, and they sailed to America.”

    “From Ireland?”

    “Yes, Pinky.  From Ireland.”

Tina stared at her father for a few moments.  She then turned to Bette. “Well, we’ve got the answer.”

    “To what?”

“I can give you the details later, but the short answer is that it turns out that Angie really is Irish.”

    1. Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! This was certainly a great treat on your behalf, before hitting the road, and go on vacation. Thanks for sharing with us the TRUE story of St. Patrick’s. We enjoyed it a LOT. We are in love with the wolfies, especially Angie’s cousins. They are SO cute! You left us with this HUGE grin on our faces. Thank you, again for this beautiful update. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick)

    2. Another great chapter! I loved the part where Angie was telling the pups that St. Partick’s Day was about fireworks and people hitting each other. Made me laugh!

    3. That was hilarious. Kids do have short attention spans (as well as some adults, ME for one). Kit’s flash back allowed the readers to see into Bette and Kit’s past and what made them who they are today.

    4. i know i ought to read before i comment but i felt the need to mention the word “earworm” just because. THANKS for posting, btw. Don’t think anyone can ever get enough of your writing and humor, no matter what you say.

    5. I laughed as soon as I saw your post. Here are so many wonderful stories on this side, some romantic, some tragic, some deeply sad, but this one is sooo …different. Even when the circumstances like in a fairytale the behaviour of Bette and Tina are believable. I hope to see more from you. :) Ps. I like the little pup Trouble. He is sweet.

    6. Well, honestly, I don’t think it’s been established that Angie is Irish (although Jennifer Beals is), but her cousins are. But so what? Come March 17 everybody is. I’ll just note that pre-Patrick dogs and wolves appear to have been important clan totems in the Celtic system. So are they going to serve green beer to the wolves for St. Patrick’s? Dogs love beer, I’m sure wolves would, too. And they could all celebrate their heritage.

    7. i just read this “There were customers who did not realize that they made excuses to go to The Planet just so they could catch an installment of the Tina and Bette melodrama” and i had to comment really quick so i can continue reading…this phrase reminded me of me, my excuse to watch TLW that was unbearable sometimes, was to catch an installment of Tibette melodrama… :) brb

    8. Great update… love the humour and loved Kit’s flashback. Great story you write so well and I can actually see Tina and Bette behaving just like that with their wolf relatives :)

    9. I liked the story of St Patrick’s (I never knew it), and I liked the bit of backstory with Kit and Bette even more. I think Red is the least grateful houseguest ever. It’s maybe time for him to jog on. “Cranky” Hunter will have one less mouth to feed, at any rate. In-laws, eh? Tina’s father’s reaction to the story really is funny. Thanks for the post, Spumoni.

    10. Love this story, Love Lit’Bit and so love Troubles. He loves Bette so much. I can see him in a chair with his head on Bettes lap. Maybe if the leave T&B house they can leave Him and tell everyone he is an Irishwolf Hound.
