March Madness II ~ Being Green~ A Backstory Holiday Tale

Kit saw the stricken look on Bette’s face before she heard the words she had said and Kit was horrified.  She understood what the art set meant to the younger child. On a Saturday, eighteen months earlier, Maxine had taken Bette to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and they walked through the galleries as Maxine had explained the paintings and sculptures to her six-year old daughter.  They had arrived when the museum opened, had lunch in its cafeteria, and had stayed until it closed.  On Sunday morning, Maxine had taken Bette to an art supply store and had explained the different media.  Sunday afternoon, Maxine showed her daughter how to use everything in the art set she had bought at the supply store for the little girl.  Monday, when Bette came home from school, Maxine was gone. No one had heard from her since, though Bette did not know that.  Aunt Grace told Bette that her mother was traveling the world so that she could see all of the wonderful paintings and come home and tell her about them. She sent Bette cards and Christmas, birthday, Easter and Valentines Day’s gifts that were supposedly from Maxine.  Melvin said it was better to tell the truth, but Aunt Grace was sure that Maxine would be back soon.  After all, she was certain, who could leave her own child.

Kit was heartsick by what she had said and, with a seventeen-year old’s maturity, she became angry at her sister for making her feel so bad.  “Get in the tub now before I kill you.”  She watched her sister tuck her head down and run towards the bath.  Kit knew she was crying.

Kit quickly calmed down.  She slowly opened the bathroom door and saw her sister dutifully in the tub and rubbing soap into her washcloth.

“That water must be cold by now, Baby Sis.  I’m gonna add some hot water.”

    Bette began scrubbing.

“And your bubbles are almost gone.  Lemme add some more,” Kit said in a cheery voice.

Kit fussed, letting water out of the tub as she added more hot water and directing the new bubble bath into the stream of water so it would have the maximum effect.

    1. Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! This was certainly a great treat on your behalf, before hitting the road, and go on vacation. Thanks for sharing with us the TRUE story of St. Patrick’s. We enjoyed it a LOT. We are in love with the wolfies, especially Angie’s cousins. They are SO cute! You left us with this HUGE grin on our faces. Thank you, again for this beautiful update. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick)

    2. Another great chapter! I loved the part where Angie was telling the pups that St. Partick’s Day was about fireworks and people hitting each other. Made me laugh!

    3. That was hilarious. Kids do have short attention spans (as well as some adults, ME for one). Kit’s flash back allowed the readers to see into Bette and Kit’s past and what made them who they are today.

    4. i know i ought to read before i comment but i felt the need to mention the word “earworm” just because. THANKS for posting, btw. Don’t think anyone can ever get enough of your writing and humor, no matter what you say.

    5. I laughed as soon as I saw your post. Here are so many wonderful stories on this side, some romantic, some tragic, some deeply sad, but this one is sooo …different. Even when the circumstances like in a fairytale the behaviour of Bette and Tina are believable. I hope to see more from you. :) Ps. I like the little pup Trouble. He is sweet.

    6. Well, honestly, I don’t think it’s been established that Angie is Irish (although Jennifer Beals is), but her cousins are. But so what? Come March 17 everybody is. I’ll just note that pre-Patrick dogs and wolves appear to have been important clan totems in the Celtic system. So are they going to serve green beer to the wolves for St. Patrick’s? Dogs love beer, I’m sure wolves would, too. And they could all celebrate their heritage.

    7. i just read this “There were customers who did not realize that they made excuses to go to The Planet just so they could catch an installment of the Tina and Bette melodrama” and i had to comment really quick so i can continue reading…this phrase reminded me of me, my excuse to watch TLW that was unbearable sometimes, was to catch an installment of Tibette melodrama… :) brb

    8. Great update… love the humour and loved Kit’s flashback. Great story you write so well and I can actually see Tina and Bette behaving just like that with their wolf relatives :)

    9. I liked the story of St Patrick’s (I never knew it), and I liked the bit of backstory with Kit and Bette even more. I think Red is the least grateful houseguest ever. It’s maybe time for him to jog on. “Cranky” Hunter will have one less mouth to feed, at any rate. In-laws, eh? Tina’s father’s reaction to the story really is funny. Thanks for the post, Spumoni.

    10. Love this story, Love Lit’Bit and so love Troubles. He loves Bette so much. I can see him in a chair with his head on Bettes lap. Maybe if the leave T&B house they can leave Him and tell everyone he is an Irishwolf Hound.
