    Love and Basketball Chapter 35

“What do you bloody care about what she thinks of your party?  You don’t even attend this school.”

“H I know that.  I’m just saying I don’t think she’s into the whole wear a costume thing which makes your plan a little difficult to pull off, no?”

“Fuck.  Ok, I’ll think of something. Get out of the building before you’re picked up for loitering the halls.”

    “Ok.  Talk to you later.”

Elaine looked around to make sure no one was within earshot.  She walked out of one of the side doors before she was noticed by anyone.

The Angels are preparing for practice and Bette decides to go speak to coach to get some advice.

“Coach can I talk to you?”

“Yes sure Bette.  Come in.  What’s up?”

“So I’m having trouble deciding my future.  What do you know about coach VanDerveer?”

“Well she’s tough.  She expects her players to put in extra time to work on their weak spots.  If you miss 4 or 5 free throws in a game for instance, expect to shoot 100 free throws after practice the next day.”

Bette is digesting what the coach is saying.

“You do not have many holes in your game but you haven’t been challenged very much.  The level of play will increase with each year in college.  You’ll have to stay on top of your game to remain the exceptional player that you are.”

    “Thanks coach.”

“I guess you probably know that Tina and I are seeing each other.”

“I’ve heard.  “So do you love her?”  Bette couldn’t stop the smile from forming on her face.”

“I think I just got my answer.” Sandy said smiling.  “So tell me something.”

    “Yes?”
“Were you two together during our tournament last month?”

“We were just starting out.”  Bette admitted.  The cat’s out of the bag so she thought she may as well be honest.

“Really?  Well, if your basketball career doesn’t work out, you may have a future in acting young lady!”  Bette knew she was caught but the smirk on Sandy’s face told her she wasn’t angry with Bette’s deception about her relationship with Tina when she told her they would be roomies.

“Who me?”  Bette replied pointing to herself.

“Yes you.  So are you worried you won’t be able to concentrate on your game next year?”

“Well if I go to UConn, I’ll only see T on breaks.  I don’t know if we can survive the distance.”

“Some people feel love and basketball don’t mix.  You will always have to make a choice between your two loves at some point.”

    “Why can’t I have both?”

“You can have both Bette.  You may just have to sacrifice one for the other at first, but if you play your cards right-you can have it all in the end.”

“Hmm I think I understand.  Whatever I decide to do, it won’t be easy.”

“Bette you will make a tremendous contribution to whatever team you play on.  I know you are a fierce competitor and you love to play.  You can play for the defending champs and help them get back to the final four or you can play for a team that you can help bring to the same level of UConn or Baylor.  The bottom line is nothing worth having is easy.  You’re a smart young woman Bette and you will figure it out.”

    "I hope so.  Thanks coach."

"Your welcome Bette.  Try not to stress too much about it.  If you two are as well suited as I think you are, I believe you will work it out."

    1. Great update (as usual)! So I love the movie Love & Basketball too but it takes a serious toll on me emotionally. There are so many highs & lows in the movie… If you’re trying prepare us readers for what’s to come I better get my tissues ready. So Helena has put her newest plan in place. I’m intrigued by the idea of a costume party and can envision all he mayhem when alcohol and mask are involved. PPS’

    2. I will definitely keep reading because I think it’s hilarious how Bette finds all these little excuses as to why she shouldn’t be with Tina. It’s funny because Bette can definitely get em, but she can’t hold on to them. I do feel bad for Tina but she’s young as well so getting over it should not be too difficult. Come on Carmen, Bette is starting to get bored. It’s your turn. Thanks for the post.
