    Lifeline – Bette and Tina

“Well, that’s what I’m here for,” she smiled warmly.  Bette forgot why she had wanted to try to do it alone in the first place.  Oh, yeah.  Pride.  But things were so much easier with Tina’s help.  Why did she have to learn the same lessons over and over?  Tina was there for her.  Always.  She always would be.  Tina balanced her mercurial temperament, her stubborn willfulness, her pride .  She made things make sense.  She loved Bette.  God knew why.  God knew she was a handful.  Tina knew it too, but she seemed to like the challenge.  She rose to it most every day, for better or worse.

She called the studio and explained that she would be in a bit late due to a family emergency.  The second unit was shooting off the lot that morning and she didn’t need to be around for that anyway.  Principal photography would not begin until after noon, as they would be shooting into the night.  So she had time to take Bette to the chiropractor and get her back home before going in to work.  Luckily, the doctor had a cancellation.  Tina’s convertible was too low to the ground for Bette to slide into without extreme discomfort, so Tina drove Bette’s car, which was a bit better, surrounding her with pillows, and she still grimaced whenever they came to a stop.  Twice she hit a pothole provoking a stream of epithets, not directed at Tina, but frightening nonetheless.  Bette certainly knew how to swear, especially when she was in pain.

The chiropractic visit helped tremendously, rendering Bette upright again, but she was quite sore from the adjustment, and was ordered (by Tina) to rest for the remainder of the day.  Tucking her patient in to watch a movie, Tina sat beside her on the bed, stroking her hair tenderly.  The phone and remotes were within her reach, she had two large bottles of sparkling water, fruit and assorted snacks in a basket beside her, a short stack of magazines, her laptop to watch movies on and an alarm set to go off when she needed to take a muscle relaxer again.  The pain had left her exhausted but she managed a wan smile for Tina’s benefit.  The medication she already had on board had made her a bit fuzzy.

I’m glad Bette told her that she missed her when she’s not there. Essentially telling her that she loved her more than words could say. Thanks for posting. More Please.
