Life Happens: Holidays R Us
Imagine there’s no country
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion to…
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…
You
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Snow fell drearily outside, succumbing to the strange shifts in temperature, to become slush and grey black lumps of ice. The tall brick house was the kind of family dwelling most often used when a Christmas movie was made. The Beetles and John Lennon were balanced out in the background when Bette switched on a Billie Holiday cd.
But this seemingly pristine holiday was turning into the usual crap, and Jamie Lee Curtis, that kid from Home Alone, and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, were nowhere to be found.
Inside, a massive fight was unfolding.
“I’m going to do humanitarian work!” Elaine, Helena’s ex-lover, was shouting at Helena’s departing back. Tina, Bette and Alice looked apprehensively at one another, each aware that they personally disagreed with Elaine’s decision to join the British military’s ranks in Iraq (especially at a time when they were being reduced by the actual leader of the country), but also aware that they had no right to say anything about it.
“Helena, talk to me!” But the tall brunette would not engage with such a heated discussion. Why bother? They wouldn’t change one another’s minds.
“Oh shit.” Bette mumbled. Alice looked enraged, but stayed out of it. She had, afterall, encouraged Helena’s passion with ending this façade of a war. Her girlfriend was gone, and Helena wouldn’t stand for the same for her best friend.
Helena made her way through the house. She knew she was being immature, but she couldn’t show such anger in front of her children for whatever reason. Elaine found her sitting on the guest room bed, shaking slightly with anger. Or, perhaps it was fear.
“Hey…look, I just can’t stand here while this shit plays out on the evening news…” Their physical boundaries had shifted since Helena’s relationship with Bette had blossomed. No longer would they be ‘friends with benefits’ and now Elaine felt strangely as though she had to censor even touching her old friend. She was thus surprised when Helena engulfed her in a bear hug.

…..and a good time was had by all. Cheesy turtlenecks, har! I sometimes wonder what the fuck I’m learning at school, but it doesn’t in any way relate to marriage of any variety. And I can remember when adults were both worrisome and baffling, although Wilson seems to be the most grown up of those present. I hope Elaine can get an assignment that she be comfortable with, but it sounds like her goals are diametrically opposed to that of any military, unless they have politcos above them wanting to manage a PR campaign. Now don’t go getting upset with me, I’m as pro-peace and anti-violence as anybody (and I’m certainly not suggesting that the current military endevours of the US are even coherent), I’m glad to say very little of it has directly been in my life, but I suggest that there are times when it is necessary to fight or else offer oneself as martyr or slave. That view was informed by my many years in the streets and subways of NYC, truly a microcosm of the world. Well, just something for you to chew on, since you offered. Didn’t you offer? Anyway, it may interest you to know that just before I read this I was ordering a few books on line that had been suggested to me. What was that Peggy qoute you liked? Something like “Blahbiddyblah”?
I saw that video you were talking about. Apparently it is Jenny’s vision of other couples for her book. I didn’t recongnize them at first. Its kind of hot but they need to slow it down. Bette does rush things but we know Helena seduces you. Now back to your story. Great story. Wilson finally comes out of the closet
T in a 3 some with Elaine and who? am I that duh????? that I can’t figur
That was still a pleasantly laid back xmas, despite the tension over Elaine’s choice, and Bette’s lingering bit of jealousy… I’m sure Helena’s taken care of that. Bed death indeed. Interesting that their never gonna get “same-sex married”… I suppose they’re taking the Four Weddings approach? And Tina and Elaine’s threesome… well, it could maybe help her settle in better? hee! Anyway, thanks for the chapter, hb, cheers
Wonderful as always. Bette and Helena are the perfect couple to debunk the insidious LBD myth, and I can’t think of a better antidote to Bette’s Xmas blues. Naturally, I’m delighted that Wilson is following his bliss all the way to ballet school.
