Life and Love and Why – 10

Bette glanced back at Ned, who was looking at her. She knew then that he had been able to read the same things about his younger sister, and that he had not been allowed to reassure her.

But Bette was worried: Tina had called Helena, not her. Maybe their embrace earlier had been a fluke, maybe Tina was just happy to see a familiar face. Bette wondered what it was about Helena that had assured Tina that the Brit would know what she was going through.

Helena had been close with her father, too. She’d also sat at his bedside when he died.

Was the reason Tina called Helena because she wasn’t in the position to call Bette, or was Bette a cheap replacement for the support she’d really needed for Helena?

    "Are you sure?"

Bette snapped back to attention, turning to Ned, who’d asked the question. "What?"

Ned pointed to the building beside them. The diner. "Breakfast. I was asking Tina if she’s sure she doesn’t want some yet. But what about you?"

Bette looked to the blonde, and knew that Tina could protest all she wanted, Helena would never have allowed her to be alone.

"I think I’m going to stick with Tina for now," Bette told Ned. "Make sure she actually does go to sleep."

Ned shrugged, handing her back her bags. "Alright. Call me if you need anything."

    Bette nodded. "We will."

Ned shook his head at her, and turned to Tina, putting his hands on her shoulders and holding her firmly at arm’s length. "As your big brother, I am telling you that you don’t need to be all composed and cool about what’s going on. You’re nobody’s caretaker, Tina."

    "Angelica."

"Except for her." Ned quickly amended. "Paul and I are grown men and are appropriately emotionally-stunted. You shouldn’t follow our lead."

    "Reassuring as always, Ned."

    "Call me for anything."

Tina smiled weakly. "Is that an order?"

    "You’re damn right it is."

Tina pointed. "You might make it to the breakfast special."

"You’re really sure you two don’t want to eat first?"

"I’ll eat later." Tina told him.

    "I’m fine." Bette assured him.

He shrugged, and went inside the diner.

Tina turned to Bette. "I’m fine. If you’re hungry—"

    1. Bette is where she’s supposed to be — the rest is details. :-) Crises have a way of clarifying what’s really important. I agree, Helena is a good friend. I understand Tina’s fear that she’ll never be able to tell her father how much she loves him, although IMO he already knows – as a daughter she can’t help but feel that. Tina doesn’t need a white knight, though having Bette beside her surely provides something essential. Thanks for this story.

    2. Oh Tiff, what a fabulous update. The death of Bette’s father drew them back together before, let’s hope that Tina’s father (even if he gets well) draws them back together againg. When they are both emotionally spent, their guard is down and they are able to see, hear and understand each other’s vulnerabilities best. I can’t wait for your next post Tiff…I really can’t!

    3. Regardless of what is happening in Bette and Tina’s relationship they are still bound together through their undying love. They may not realize that the love is still there, but it definitely is or Bette would not be there with Tina during this difficult time. Awesome post and thanks for writing again.

    4. Good to see that Helena did not go to see Tina and let common sense prevail and let Bette go to her. Helena is a good friend but Tina needed Bette at this time. Also so happy Tina did not reject Bette’s attempt to comfort her. They are where they belong, together. That was a wonderful chapter. Thanks for posting.

    5. I’ve always thought, until now, that ‘Endless Love’ by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie was the most mawkish of tunes. However, “My first love, you’re every breath that I take” came to mind while reading that last sentence. Bette and Tina belong. They have a bond that transcends disagreements. They are each others family. You made that very plain. They can talk details later. Thank you.

    6. I don’t think Mr K thinks Tina hates him, and even if he did, her presence at the hospital should be proof enough that she doesn’t. Bette’s presence, that’s proof of something as well, but whether Tina can deal with everything that’s going to have to be discussed as well as her father’s health issues is another thing entirely. Nice update, tiff. Thanks

    7. Awesome Brilliant update!:) I’m so happy Bette is there with Tina (I’m doing a happy dance :D) Thank you for this story and I’m so glad that it’s Bette comforting Tina. Thank you again :)

    8. God I had been dying for a new post from you Tiff! Finally Tina can just let go all her anxiety and frustration about her father’s health and know that it is with the right person who is there to support her no matter what and I believe Bette will be everything that Tina needs right now. Thanks Tiff! More soon pls! :)

    9. I am also doing the happy dance. I am really, rally happy that Tina called Bette. Bette is Tina’s rock, her confidante. I hope they take this time to talk to each other without outside interference. I hope Tina’s dad wakes up soon, so she can tells him that she loves him. Great update. I love this story. PPS

    10. I was waiting the whole weekend, then realised it’s memorial day weekend in the states. Thanks Tiff!Tina is becoming undone, and let herself go when Bette is there. Bette needs to be more sure of herself, of her intentions.I am hoping Bette and Jodi’s done before she went to see Tina. Please post soon! Please please don’t let Bette another room! They need to be together as much as possible during this trying time in Tina’s life.

    11. That was a very good update. I am happy to see Bette being the person there that Tina needed. I have no doubt that she would be there unconditionally. Maybe Mr. K and wake up soon and reassure Tina.

    12. Bette will know instinctually what to do, the type of solace and comfort that Tina needs b/c she is her true soulmate regardless of their present situation.JB played Bette as such a force of nature that for me, it’s impossible to imagine anyone else in the role and for Bette to act in anyway but loving w/Tina. I think they both learned from their mistakes. Post as soon as you can.

    13. HEY TD, I am back and ready to comment of this fabulous fan fiction. I was overjoyed when Bette appeared at the hospital. Now the reality of this situation is starting to take affect. Tina and Bette so berlong together that it takes a family health emergency to get them in the same room. I do hope that this help them sort out their true feelings. Bette and Tina have the kind of connection most of us just dream about. Time to let it flow and show them how important them are to each other and how they should move forward, together. Please continue soon as I really love your style of drama and narrative. A true pleasure. Your Loyal Fan.

    14. I LOVE this story so much that it got me to read all your other past stories (mini-marathon I may add – love ALL of them). You write so well. I’m so glad Bette is with Tina in the hotel room – she knows how to take care of her woman and will certainly be able to handle Tina’s mom and sister if needed.
