– Carmen…

– Please Shane, it’s fine. Let’s just eat so we can do homework later. Besides my clothes will probably be dry by then.

– Whatever you say brainy.

Dinner went by with the two girls talking and laughing at nothing in particular. Carmen was brilliant as everybody said and though she was weird as hell, Shane couldn’t find her anything more but interesting.

After dinner they did the new homework while still chatting. Shane discovered that Carmen wasn’t only a very easy person to be with but she even made homework more entertaining. She was having fun with her.

Once they both finished their essays it was already midnight so Shane took Carmen home.

– Okay, so, I’ll see you tomorrow then…

– Yes.

And just when Shane was about to turn on the engine of her bike Carmen called.

– Shane?

– yeah?

– Thank you, really. For all of this. I know that it’s not like you but-

Carmen thanked her looking her at the eyes and with so much gratitude Shane almost chocked. Shane couldn’t do nothing but stare back.

– Hey, hey it’s fine. I like doing it. it’s not that big of a deal, really. Night Carmen.

– Good night Shane.

And with that Shane left. She wasn’t sure why but she was extremely happy. It felt right to be doing something good for someone. After all, she didn’t feel capable of being nice at all. Carmen had said it, it wasn’t like her. But with Carmen, with Carmen being a good person seemed like something possible.

Two weeks had passed since that night and the routine had turned to be always the same. After biology class Shane would whisper something to Carmen trying to arrange their meeting and Carmen would agree. While in school Shane would avoid anything that relates her with the nerdy and when outside, they would laugh and chat like real friends. After all she was spending more time with Carmen than with her actually friends. It was hot and cold trying to fake the charade for her friends in school and then being relaxed with Carmen. But Carmen had that, that thing that seemed to clean Shane’s aura. It was like just being with her could spread a little light inside Shane’s dark soul.
